Position Description:

*** this position has been closed and new applications are no longer accepted. ***

The light-front QCD group at the Institute of Modern Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences announces the opening of one or more postdoc positions beginning in 2021 with flexible starting date. The positions are initially for one year with the possibility of an extension for up to two additional years. The base salary is 8250*12 CNY/year (~15500 USD/year) before taxes but if the applicant wins fellowships by Chinese Academy of Sciences (or other funding agencies), this will be increased to 200000 CNY/year (~31000 USD/year). Candidates should have a Ph.D. by the starting date and have expertise in an area relevant to the group's research interests. Experience with numerical computation is a plus.

Research Description: The group's interests concentrate on light-front quantum field theory and its applications in hadron/nuclear physics, relativistic heavy-ion physics, strong field QED and other areas where light-front dynamics may find applications. We are particularly interested in exploring nonperturbative frontiers of those areas through large-scale numerical computation and real-time simulation. Scientists in this group include Xingbo Zhao and Chandan Mondal. We collaborate actively with our colleagues working on the Electron-ion Collider in China (EicC) program. This group maintains a regular collaboration with the light-front field theory group in Iowa State University in the US led by Prof. James. P. Vary.

Institute Description: The Institute of Modern Physics is a branch of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. It is roughly the equivalent of JLab in the US or DESY in Germany. It employs ~1000 staff members including ~400 researchers. It operates the Heavy Ion Research Facility in Lanzhou, which consists of the Sector Focusing Cyclotron, the Separated Sector Cyclotron, the Cooler Storage Ring, the Radioactive Ion Beam Line, and a number of experimental terminals. For more details, see: http://english.imp.cas.cn.

Lanzhou Description: Lanzhou is the capital and largest city of Gansu Province in Northwest China. It is a culturally-diverse silk road town of 3 million people at the crossroads of the orient, Tibet, central Asia and Mongolia. It is a key regional transportation hub, allowing areas further west to maintain railroad connections to the eastern half of the country. It is about an hour’s drive from the beginning of the Tibetan plateau. For images of Gansu province, see: https://vimeo.com/112971504. The cost of a meal at a common restaurant in Lanzhou is 10-20 CNY (~1.5-3 USD) while a taxi costs 1.5 CNY/kilometer (~ 0.25 USD/kilometer). Lanzhou is served by its airport with ~20 direct flights/day to Beijing and ~10 flights/day to Shanghai. International destinations served by direct flights include Taipei, Hongkong, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Dubai, Osaka, St. Petersburg, Frankfurt.
