Occupational Summary

Manage and coordinate engineering-related activities for the Pratt School of Engineering first-year design course.  Duties include budgeting, purchasing, compliance, and technical consultation services. Provide journeyman level professional engineering services by supporting teams in a variety of technical duties such as the planning, design, construction, and troubleshooting of first-year design projects in the fields of electrical, biomedical, civil/environmental, and mechanical engineering.

Work Performed

Provide engineering assistance, instruction and consultation to student design teams and faculty for construction of prototypes and resolution of related technical problems.  In this context, support engineering design teams in varied and somewhat complex professional engineering practice to design, develop, construct and test design solutions, which will include created prototypes, devices, systems, and software code.  Advise students on what materials to use/procure for their projects.  Work with teams to analyze their design to determine feasibility of implementation. 

Demonstrate techniques for operating specialized equipment, including hand tools, electronics, CAD, and rapid prototyping equipment. Provide electronic and computer support for interfacing analog experiments with digital computers. 

Assist in the continuous improvement of the design teaching space. Develop and implement systems for students to reserve, use, and access equipment, tables, and tools.  Schedule, supervise, and perform routine maintenance on equipment, components, apparatus and systems in the design space; troubleshoot problems and perform repair work as needed.

Work with students to develop and manage team project budgets.  Work with course instructors and other staff to manage budgets for the course and facility. Procure supplies and materials for teams. 

Ensure compliance with applicable safety and efficacy requirements. This includes developing training protocols for students on how to safely use equipment in the design lab.

Recommend various personnel actions including, but not limited to, hiring, performance appraisal, promotions, transfers and vacation schedules. Collect information and data through observation, experimentation, and various other methods.  Maintain or supervise the maintenance of technical files and manuals of information. 

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications

Education/Training: Work requires a thorough knowledge of the principles of engineering, the engineering design process, and related natural sciences acquired through completion of a Bachelor's degree program in engineering, an engineering science, or a related natural science such as physics. Due to professional exemption, equivalent experience cannot be substituted for a bachelor's degree.

Experience: Work requires two years of related experience sufficient to acquire competency in the application of knowledge in an engineering field. A master's degree in engineering or a related natural science may offset the required experience.

Skills:  Knowledge of engineering design process and advanced trouble-shooting techniques.  Knowledge of construction techniques and prototyping tools (e.g., 3D printer, laser cutter, Arduino) and related software.  Ability to relate to and coach students.
