The Jacobs Technion-Cornell Institute (Jacobs Institute) seeks to fill a tenured/tenure-track faculty position in Computer Science at Cornell Tech in New York City. Cornell Tech is Cornell University’s technology-focused graduate-level campus in New York City. The Jacobs Institute is a cornerstone of Cornell Tech, representing the collaboration between the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology and Cornell University. Jacobs faculty members are fully part of and totally integrated with the faculty at Cornell Tech.  Faculty hired in this position will be academically appointed within the Technion, at the Assistant, Associate or Full Professor level, and permanently located at Cornell Tech in New York City. While the tenure home of the position is the Technion, employment and benefits are delivered through Cornell University. Successful applicants will also have a visiting position and will be eligible for graduate field membership at Cornell and, because of the strong partnership between Cornell and Technion, will have many rights and privileges of Cornell faculty members, including (with graduate field membership) the ability to supervise Cornell PhD students.

The Jacobs Institute shares with Cornell Tech the mission of developing leaders and technologies for the digital age, with a goal of revolutionizing academia’s approach to entrepreneurship and interaction with industry. Our research, therefore, focuses on the broad applied area of computing and information sciences. The Institute seeks candidates with demonstrated trans-disciplinary interests and a track record of translating research results into real-world impact, especially in sectors of substantial importance to New York City. Jacobs faculty members push the envelope of academia, combining world-class research and teaching with innovative, out-of-the-box thinking.

We are interested in exceptional applicants in Computer Science who will enhance Cornell Tech’s and the Jacobs Institute’s current research interests and complement their current faculty expertise. Cornell CS, the primary departmental affiliation of this position, is ranked among the top computer science departments in the country (http://www.cs.cornell.edu/).

Candidates whose work is related to our emerging interests in urban tech are particularly encouraged to apply, as are those whose work relates to our focus areas of health tech and connective media. Particular technical areas of interest include Artificial Intelligence (including Machine Learning and Foundations); Data Mining, Modeling and Science; and Applied Software and Systems.

Candidates must hold a Ph.D., have demonstrated an ability to conduct outstanding research at the level of tenure-track or tenured faculty at the Technion, and also have a strong commitment to engagement outside of academia in ways that foster significant commercial or societal impact, as aligned with the mission of the Cornell Tech campus. Successful candidates are expected to pursue an active research program, to teach Master’s and Ph.D.-level graduate courses, and to supervise graduate students.

To ensure full consideration, applications should be received by December 1, 2019, but will be considered until the position is filled. Cornell CS also has multiple open faculty positions on its Ithaca campus. These positions are not housed in the Jacobs Institute and their tenure homes are Cornell University. Candidates interested in the positions based on the Ithaca campus should submit their applications through https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/14625.

Applicants should submit a curriculum vitae, and brief statements of research and teaching interests and contributions to diversity, identify one or two top publications to which they have made significant contributions, and request that at least four references on their behalf be submitted through https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/15151. A distinguishing characteristic of research at the Jacobs Institute, in addition to world-class academic work, is that it engages deeply with external communities, organizations, K-12 education, and industry to address real-world problems and contexts that amplify the direct commercial and societal impact of our research. Accordingly, within a clearly identified section of the research statement, the candidate should address prior accomplishments and future plans related to this kind of direct commercial and/or societal impact of their research.
