Resource Access Librarian Ford Library

OVERVIEW: The Resource Access Librarian is responsible for complex and specialized technical duties within a library setting to ensure library users have access to electronic resources and data. Works in a highly collaborative, dynamic environment as a member of the Data Services and Reference Teams to provide library users with end-to-end support for teaching and research using data and online research resources. Performs copy and original cataloging for resources in all formats in accordance with established policies, procedures, and standards. Solves complicated bibliographic problems and conflicts within OPAC records, and is responsible for bibliographic database maintenance in the integrated library system (ILS). This is a Professional Library Staff position and it reports to the Associate Director and IT Services Manager.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Cataloging (40%) Catalogs library materials in all formats, including electronic resources such as e-books and databases, using standard cataloging principles and standards. Ensures compliance with national and local standards such as MARC, RDA, and OCLC cataloging practices and other appropriate cataloging specifications. Ensures catalog integrity by performing cataloging maintenance functions on bibliographic records for monographs, serials, and electronic resources. Formats out-of-date information in bibliographic and holdings records to resolve to current standards. Develops and implements cataloging policies and procedures. Takes part in the development and implementation of Duke Libraries’ new ILS and its cataloging module and interfaces. Liaises and collaborates with Duke Libraries’ main campus departments on this and other technical services projects that may impact Ford Library cataloging workflows and materials.

Data Lifecycle Management (30%) As a member of the Data Services Team, provides assistance to Fuqua faculty and students in discovering sources of research data in close collaboration with researchers, and data providers. Facilitates clear and effective communication between data providers and researchers regarding research data specifications and project requirements throughout the data lifecycle process. Collaborates with researchers, vendors, and other Data Services Team staff on the data acquisitions process including, but not limited to: investigating funding sources for data, communicating with senior Fuqua management, negotiating pricing and licensing terms, and assessing data storage and access requirements. Works collaboratively with the Data Services Team leadership and other Fuqua and/or Duke University IT staff to deploy and manage access to acquired research data. Assists and trains students and faculty as needed in data extraction, cleaning/formatting, and visualization.  

Reference (30%) Provides reference assistance: serves up to 10-15 hours per week on the research services desk, fielding questions and recommending resources to patrons. Reference assistance is provided in person, by phone, email, and chat. Questions are related to business, finance, economics, and occasionally cross-disciplinary areas such as engineering, public policy, and law; Teaches, and assists the reference team in developing, scheduled bibliographic and database instruction classes during the academic year on topics including Bloomberg, the job hunt, and business strategy; Evaluates trial databases for potential purchase by providing feedback to library leadership regarding need, usability, and cost of resources as pertains to the Fuqua community; Creates content for Fuqua classes by selecting resources from the Ford and Duke Libraries to be included in online web guides as needed; Performs other reference team duties as assigned which may include assisting with, or leading library tours, or working with vendor representatives in database training settings;

Required Qualifications Education/Training: Master's degree from an ALA-accredited library or information science program. Experience Demonstrates in-depth knowledge and expertise in one or more areas of information resources and services such as cataloging, reference services, and electronic resources and data management. Requires a minimum of one year of technical services experience in an academic or research environment, including cataloging experience; Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills; analytical skills, able to work independently and as a member of a team; high proficiency using computer based technology and ability to adapt to new technologies; demonstrated commitment to providing outstanding customer services. Experience providing research services in an academic or research environment; must be comfortable working in an open office environment; demonstrated flexibility skills; resourcefulness in problem solving, and a commitment to professional growth and development. Preferred Prior cataloging experience in an academic business library or professional business library setting; experience using business research databases. Prior experience using software tools for data retrieval, cleaning/formatting and analysis. Skills Familiarity with the continuing resources and data management lifecycle, knowledge and experience searching and editing in an integrated library system, or other web interface tools to bibliographic databases; knowledge of Connexion (OCLC), Serials Solutions, and Aleph (ExLibris) or a comparable integrated library system; proficient knowledge of MS Office; demonstrated ability to search and interpret information retrieved from the Internet.
