Description:

The Fermilab Theoretical Physics Department expects to have post-doctoral research appointments available in the area of theoretical quantum information science (QIS), working at its interface with fundamental physics and quantum field theory. The positions will carry three-year terms, starting in the fall of 2020.

QIS is a growing research direction of the Fermilab Theoretical Physics Department with ongoing and recent work on simulation of quantum field theories and connections of quantum sensors to probes of fundamental physics The department also has an existing strong research program in Lattice QCD, Perturbative QCD, Neutrino Physics, Dark Matter, Physics Beyond the Standard Model and Astro-particle Physics and Cosmology. The Fermilab Theoretical Physics Department is part of a consortium with the Institute for Quantum Information and Matter at Caltech and the Institute for Nuclear Theory at the University of Washington.

Topics of interest include:

* Quantum simulation of quantum field theories describing strongly coupled systems.

* Applying quantum technologies and quantum sensors to probe fundamental physics, such as dark matter and new forces.

* Quantum algorithms for traditional HEP computational problems.

* Tensor networks, their utility for simulation and their connections to quantum gravity.

The successful candidate will take part in the Fermilab Quantum Science Program (https://qis.fnal.gov). Current members of the Theoretical Physics Department are John Campbell, Marcela Carena, Bogdan Dobrescu, Joshua Frieman, Patrick Fox, Walter Giele, Nick Gnedin, Roni Harnik, Christopher Hill, Stefan Hoeche, Craig Hogan, Dan Hooper, Gordon Krnjaic, Andreas Kronfeld, Pedro Machado, Stephen Parke, Albert Stebbins, and Michael Wagman. Scientists part of the consortium include John Preskill (Caltech) and Martin Savage and David Kaplan (U. Washington). Further details about the Theoretical Department are posted on our web page: http://theory.fnal.gov/. Postdoctoral research associates in the Fermilab Theoretical Physics Department are appointed for three years.

Qualifications:

Candidates should have obtained a Ph.D. in theoretical particle physics or quantum information science, or a closely related field, or expect to earn a Ph.D. in the same fields, by September 1, 2020.

Demonstrated experience in theoretical physics and/or QIS research.

Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Willingness to respect, understand and value individual differences that embody laboratory principles of diversity and inclusion.

Ability to abide by all environment, safety and health regulations.
