Supervising Attorney

Duke University School of Law seeks a Supervising Attorney for our Children’s Law Clinic for a one-year position. This is a full-time, 12-month position for the 2020-21 academic year (July-June).  The Supervising Attorney will work closely with the Clinic’s existing faculty to supervise students, handle clinic cases, and teach in the Clinic’s seminar.  The Children’s Law Clinic focuses on individual representation of children in the areas special education law, school discipline law, and accessing public benefits.  It also collaborates with a variety of local, state, and national organizations in projects relating to the education and well-being of children.

 Qualities sought in candidates for the position include the following:

  1. A record of, or demonstrated potential for, clinical teaching;
  2. Broad-based substantive legal experience in representing children, particularly in the areas of special education, school discipline, general education, and access to public benefits;
  3. A deep commitment to access to justice that is consistent with the ethos of the Duke Law clinics, as well as creativity to deploy various legal skills toward this end;
  4. The ability  and willingness to mentor students and to nurture their developing legal skills;
  5. Strong interest in building connections at local, state and national levels to engage in activities to strengthen and enforce the rights of children, especially the right to a quality education; and
  6. Current membership in the North Carolina bar.

 There may be an opportunity for renewal of the one-year contract, but that is not guaranteed.
