Position Description:    

Technology-Driven Superconducting Materials Research

Position Overview:

The Technology Innovation Directorate (TID), a division of the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, and the Laboratory for Integrated Nano-Quantum Systems at Stanford University seek a Postdoctoral Scholar for research in superconducting materials to address two primary technologies: radiofrequency (RF) particle accelerators and millimeter-wave quantum information devices. In both cases, understanding, mitigating, and reducing loss mechanisms in the superconducting material is paramount to achieving a high-performance device. The objective of the research program is to develop and study novel materials, and optimize their performance when utilized in these two technologies. The postdoctoral researcher will perform research work under the guidance of Professor Emilio Nanni.

The postdoctoral researcher will be responsible for the growth of superconducting nitride thin films (e.g. NbN, TiN) by reactive sputter deposition. Films are to be analyzed by an array of ex-situ techniques, including focused ion beam scanning electron microscopy (FIB-SEM), electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). These analysis tools are all available at either SLAC's Nano-X cleanroom facility, or at the Stanford Nano Shared Facilities. High-power cryogenic RF testing of superconducting materials is to be carried out using our customized cryostat and sample host cavity. Finally, the postdoc will work with a team of researchers to design, fabricate and test micro- and nano-scale quantum devices, to optimize device processing steps and understand materials-induced decoherence mechanisms. Note: The Research Associate role is a fixed term staff position. This is a 2 year fixed-term appointment with the possibility of extension. Assignment duration is contingent upon project needs and funding.

Applicants must provide evidence of either a recently completed PhD degree or confirmation of completion of the PhD degree requirements prior to starting the position.
