Occupational Summary Many if not most drugs are pleitotropic in their mechanism, which accounts for drug-related adverse events, but also permits their re-purposed use for areas of disease other than the originally targeted ones. The applicant will cooperate with and assist other Duke faculty in identifying or verifying the mechanism and safety and toxicity of novel drugs, drug combinations, and formulations. This will include the use of specialized in vivo methods that permit for the measurement of drug extravasation, diffusion through tissue, and mechanism of intracellular transport.

Work Performed The applicant will assist in research planning, acquisition of funds to enable the above mentioned characterization work and will, when resources are available, in collaboration with Duke faculty and others carry out above mentioned work. Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training: A PhD in biology, biomedical engineering, or other related science

Experience: The applicant should have broad experience working with appropriate animal models and analytical methods that inform about drug transport in vivo on a cellular and subcellular level. Such methods typically include in vivo microscopy.

Skills: The applicant should be apt in performing anesthesia, surgery, cannulation, drug infusion, and other appropriate experimental procedures on small animals, i.e. rats and mice, under anesthesia and in a compliant fashion. The applicant should be able to provide intra-operative and post-surgical care, and euthanasia in a humane fashion on these animals. The applicant will evaluate, interpret, summarize and publish the resulting data from these experiments.
