Postdoctoral Researcher in Plasma Physics

The Plasma Diagnostics Group in the UCLA Department of Physics and Astronomy is seeking applications for a (full-time) Postdoctoral Researcher In the area of Plasma Physics/Fusion Research. This position will be focused on experimental and simulation/modeling work to elucidate the physics behind the transition from low to high confinement mode (L- to H-mode transition), a crucial topic in fusion research. Experimental work on L-H transition physics will be carried out at the DIII-D tokamak in San Diego, taking advantage of a broad array of advanced plasma diagnostics including millimeter wave diagnostics for turbulence and plasma flow measurements. The goal of this work is to support development of a physics-based, reduced L-H transition model. Tasks will include (1) design of / participation in experiments on L-H transition physics at DIII-D in collaboration with the DIII-D team; (2) analysis of kinetic profile and turbulence data, and performing transport and stability analysis using existing code framework such as TRANSP and TGLF; (3) validation of fluid and gyrokinetic simulations of the plasma edge; and (4) participation in the development of reduced, predictive L-H transition models, based on fluid- and gyrokinetic simulations of the tokamak edge plasma, in collaboration with plasma theorists and experts from the plasma simulation community. All work will take place at the DIII-D National Fusion Facility in San Diego, CA 92121.

Qualified candidates will have received a Ph.D. in Physics or a related field, and should have a demonstrated background directly applicable to the investigative effort and tasks. Familiarity with plasma transport analysis, and/or fluid or gyrokinetic plasma simulations is a significant advantage. The initial appointment will be for a 12-month timeframe with a possible extension of 24 months. Salary will be commensurate with applicant’s expertise.
