The Department of Mechanics at École Polytechnique invites applications for a faculty position at the Assistant Professor level, in the field of geophysics related to energy issues. The profile sought consists in a strong expertise in fluid mechanics, meteorology and / or climatology. The position is related to the Energy for Climate (E4C) Interdisciplinary Center, which promotes interdisciplinary research on the energy transition at the Ecole Polytechnique. Prior knowledge on renewable energies will be appreciated, but is not required. On the other hand, the capacity and the willingness to carry out research related to the energy transition will be essential points of the application. Geophysical topics related to energy issues include the predictability, variability and intermittence of renewable resources (wind, solar, hydraulic or marine), the impact of climate change on the resources and on the vulnerability of energy infrastructures, and the environmental impacts of renewable energies (this list is not exhaustive). Cross-cutting issues at the heart of the E4C center and having a clear geophysical component may also be addressed: insertion of intermittent energy on the network, impact of renewable energy intermittency on energy economics, or development of extraction systems. Candidates must hold a PhD and have a track record of excellent research and teaching. The selected candidate will be expected to teach courses in mechanics at different levels in the different curriculum offered by Ecole Polytechnique (Bachelor, Ingénieur Polytechnicien Program and Master), and to contribute to broadening the department's course offer at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The candidate’s ability to contribute to project classes and strengthen the relationships between teaching, research and applications will be an important selection criterion. The selected candidate will be assigned to the Laboratoire de Météorologie Dynamique (Laboratory of Dynamic Meteorology, LMD) and will contribute to teaching within the Department of Mechanics. An important part of his research will be part of the E4C Center on energy transition.
