Lecturer in Hotel Operations Management
School of Hotel Administration
SC Johnson College of Business
Cornell University

The Cornell SC Johnson College of Business invites applicants for a full -time Lecturer for a three-year renewable term in our Operations, Technology and Information Management area, for placement in the School of Hotel Administration, with an intended start date of July 1, 2020. The position will be based in Ithaca, NY.

Responsibilities of the position include:

  • Teaching the freshman required core course: Introduction to Hotel Operations. This is an introductory course designed to develop a framework for understanding the lodging industry and hotel operations from the rooms perspective. It emphasizes knowledge of the industry at large and basic financial and operational functions at the property level.
  • The ability to expand current operations offerings by developing another operations elective, for example Casino Operations or Spas and Wellness.

Lecturers teach five classes each academic year and hold regular office hours to support student learning. They also recruit, manage and develop a team of undergraduate teaching assistants. Being accessible to students is critical. The lecturer for this position would teach four sections of Introduction to Hotel Operations each year with 60-80 students per section.

In addition to teaching responsibilities, lecturers have School and College service responsibilities and are expected to pursue professional development activities, such as presenting at discipline-related conferences and interacting with hospitality industry professionals to expand classroom expertise and develop highly relevant teaching materials for our students. The College supports such activities with professional development funds.  Research is not a formal component of this role, but is encouraged insofar as it complements this position’s teaching role.

The ideal candidate will possess at least a Masters degree in Hospitality Administration or Business Administration. Rigorous, recent professional experience in the hospitality industry at the property and/or the corporate level is expected.  Ideally this person would have a minimum of six years of rooms division or general manager experience in hotel operations.  Evidence of strong teaching and/or interactive presentation skills at the college level is preferred.

The Cornell SC Johnson College of Business (established on July 1, 2016) combines three Schools: the Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management (Johnson), the Charles H. Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management (Dyson), and the School of Hotel Administration (Hotel School). The School of Hotel Administration at Cornell University is the world’s top-ranked hospitality management program with undergraduate, masters, and Ph.D. programs.  The School of Hotel Administration (SHA) has approximately 800 undergraduates and 60 graduate students.  Founded in 1922, SHA is an AACSB accredited business school, with a resident faculty of 65 and over 10,000 alumni worldwide. Important resources available to faculty include extraordinary access to industry leaders, excellent research funding, the Center for Hospitality Research (CHR), and the cultural and intellectual resources of the Cornell University community.
