Faculty in the Master of Public Health Program

Cornell University
Ithaca, NY

Cornell University’s Master of Public Health Program invites applications for three new faculty positions. We seek a dynamic mix of tenure-track and specialty professorial-track faculty, each committed to changing the world through their teaching, research and practice. Founded in 2017 on principles of sustainability, equity and engagement, Cornell’s MPH Program seeks impact-oriented faculty to complement our existing, highly interdisciplinary team. Responsibilities will include teaching public health courses, pursuing scholarship that promotes the inter-dependent health of humans and the environment, and engaging in practice that translates into public health outcomes and policies that benefit community partners throughout New York State and the world.

Since its inception, Cornell has performed world-class public health teaching, research and service in wide-ranging disciplines across its Colleges and campuses, including Weill Cornell Medicine. Our growing MPH Program, recently accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health, now provides professional public health training that takes advantage of those diverse strengths. In particular, we focus on the root causes of the greatest public health challenges of our time: how humans interact with the environment, and the widening gaps in equity of various kinds.  To do this, we utilize a transdisciplinary One Health/Planetary Health systems approach, and teach the practical skills of public health with an engaged methodology featuring community partners and small groups of students, for hands-on experience and bidirectional benefit.

The division of teaching, research and practice responsibilities will capitalize on candidates’ areas of strength, interests and approaches. Successful candidates will teach MPH students and other public health trainees, such as those also pursuing MD, DVM, PhD or other degrees, and those in the public health workforce. Instruction will utilize classroom, online, intensive, and/or hybrid modalities. Teaching duties will include both core courses and delivery of elective courses that extend existing offerings. Examples include health policy, applied food safety, sustainable food systems, environmental public health, outbreak/disaster preparedness and response, biostatistics, and epidemiology. Teaching duties will also include serving as mentor/advisor to individual MPH students on their Applied Practice Experiences and Integrative Learning Experiences.

Successful candidates will be expected to perform applied, impact-oriented research, and/or engage with community partners in public health practice activities that mix research, teaching/training, outreach, and implementation science. All faculty will publish in scholarly journals as well as disseminate learning with their community partners in ways that produce tangible benefits to those stakeholders. Successful candidates will pursue extramural funding as appropriate to support scholarly activities in research and engaged practice.

We seek a mix of disciplinary approaches and experience, heavily featuring policy and the social and behavioral sciences, as well as biostatistics/epidemiology, and biological/ ecological/ environmental/ food systems sciences.  Stellar candidates from all fields relevant to sustainable and equitable public health will be considered.  However, to complement existing faculty and best advance our mission, we seek candidates in two broad areas, listed here with illustrative examples of practice foci and research interests:

Infectious disease: The successful candidate(s) will have significant practice experience with human infectious disease, working on topics such as antimicrobial resistance, biodefense, disease surveillance, vector-borne disease, or zoonoses.  Examples of relevant approaches include policy regarding prevention or outbreak response, epidemiology, study of arthropod vectors, vaccine development/communication/hesitancy, etc.

Sustainability and public health:  The successful candidate(s) will perform practice and research on linkages between human health and that of the environment, such as agriculture and nutrition, biodiversity, non-communicable disease, climate change, disaster preparedness and response, environmental health, and food systems.  Desired approaches vary widely, including understanding and overcoming the underlying social and environmental inequities (e.g. exposure to environmental toxins and/or particulate air pollution; structural inequalities in access to health care, markets, affordable nutrition, education, clean water, nature, etc.) that contribute to both disease and environmental degradation.

Use of a One Health/Planetary Health lens to address topics such as climate-induced migration of people and other species, resilience to flooding/fire, changes in food production and security, and outbreaks of introduced agricultural/human disease or emergent infectious disease, could involve approaches such as policy, ecosystem restoration, social and behavioral sciences, and modeling of health impacts.

Successful candidates must have advanced training in public health (MPH, DrPH), allied health professions (e.g. DVM/VMD, MD), relevant fields of research (PhD), or combinations thereof. Candidates with evidence of multidisciplinary training and practice or applied research experience will be preferred. Salary, rank and title will be commensurate with academic credentials, experience, duties, and program needs.

Cornell University is located in Ithaca, New York. The University offers an exciting work environment with opportunities for innovative and interdisciplinary practice, research, and teaching. This includes opportunities to work with a variety of world class partners/faculty across campus including: Cornell’s Atkinson Center for Sustainability, Center for Health Equity, Center for the Study of Inequality, Global Health Program, Institute for Public Affairs, and Cornell’s state-wide Cooperative Extension. We work particularly closely with Cornell’s CDC-funded Northeast Regional Center for Excellence in Vector-Borne Disease, the CDC-funded Integrated Center for Food Safety, and the DOT-funded Center for Transportation, Environment and Community Health. Our faculty are heavily involved in the Engaged Cornell Initiative, which brings students out of the classroom and engages them with community partners during their training. Other University-wide topics of special interest include Antimicrobial Resistance and Digital Agriculture, and a bold series of trans-disciplinary searches in Data Science, Infection Biology, Social Sciences, and Sustainability (http://provost.cornell.edu/academic-initiatives/radical-collaboration/), among others. Public health activities cross the Ithaca campus and Weill Cornell Medicine in New York City, serving New York State, the United States, and the world.
