Position Description:

Postdoctoral scholar

The Department of Physics at Case Western Reserve University seeks a postdoctoral scholar who is interested in developing broadly applicable interdisciplinary skills in machine learning.  The project involves the application of deep learning on painted artworks to attribute the hand of the painter based on surface profile images of the artists brushstrokes.  It builds on a recently completed controlled study that demonstrated the efficacy of this technique as a reliable method of attributive connoisseurship.  The project is in collaboration with the world renowned Factum Arte in Madrid and is focused on attributing sections of the later works of the famed artist El Greco.  Factum Arte has made available surface profile scans of several paintings that were scanned in their present locations.  Our art history collaborators have developed hypothetical attribution maps based on documented connoisseurship that will be tested with our deep learning techniques.  You will work with experimental and theoretical physicists as well as art historians, material scientists, and the engineers at Factum Arte.
