Description: Associate in Research Organization: Duke University Position: Research Associate Location: International Population Health and Development (IPHD) Lab at Duke University in Durham, NC, USA Reports to: Professor Duncan Thomas, Duke University Start Date: July 1, 2020 Length of Commitment: 12 months

Experience: Expertise in analysis of complex primary survey data using state-of-the-art econometric and data sciences methods to investigate scientific questions in the health and population sciences. Experience investigating impacts of stress on health and economic well-being including biological parameters using longitudinal survey data. Demonstrated ability to train and supervise lab technicians conducting enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) to measure multiple cardio-metabolic and stress-related biological markers. Knowledge of biochemistry underlying assay development and associated human biology. Demonstrated capacity to lead research projects from inception through preparation of scientific publications. Demonstrated ability to provide training, mentoring and supervision to student researcher assistants. Advanced Stata programming skills. Superior scientific writing skills. Excellent communication and inter-personal skills. Undergraduate or more advanced degree majoring in economics with minors in biology and chemistry is required. Ability to work in Bahasa Indonesian and evidence of research collaboration with Indonesian scientists.

Language Requirement: Bahasa Indonesian

Responsibilities and qualifications: This is a full time job for a research scientist who will collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team of investigators in the United States and Indonesia on studies of the long-term impacts of exposure to stress on health and well-being. The candidate will participate in empirical studies of the impact of stressors on health and well-being, broadly defined, using complex, longitudinal survey data. Candidate will develop, validate and train lab technicians for high through-put production of assays to measure key biological markers relevant for the research. Candidate will evaluate different platforms for the measurement of RNA and DNA in the field. Candidate may need to travel to and work in Indonesia. The work will be conducted in collaboration with Professor Duncan Thomas and IPHD Lab associates.
