The Triangle University Nuclear Laboratory (TUNL) is a Department of Energy Center of Excellence in Nuclear Physics. TUNL seeks to hire a full-time Research Scientist to lead its cryogenic and polarized target development program for nuclear physics experiments at the High Intensity Gamma-Ray Source (HIGS). Photonuclear experiments with cryogenic targets include Compton scattering on the proton and light nuclei and photodisintegration of light nuclei. TUNL currently operates a 3.5K single-stage cooling, heat-exchanged, quarter-liter liquid cryogenic target. We are upgrading the current target to a two-stage system with an operational temperature of 2K and below, suitable to liquefy 3He. Also, the program includes plans for performing double-polarization Compton-scattering measurements using both polarized beams and targets. This part of the program requires development a frozen-spin cryogenic and scintillating polarized proton/deuterium target. Such a target would nominally operate at a temperature of 50mK.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in physics or a related field and have significant experience, at least 2 to 5 years, in low-temperature physics equipment that operates at temperatures below 4K. Candidates with experience working with commercial cryocoolers and dilution refrigerators are preferred. The person holding this position is expected to lead a scientific program that focuses on developing and operating un-polarized and polarized cryogenic targets for photonuclear experiments. A working knowledge and experience of polarization phenomenon in nuclear physics is highly desired. The candidate is expected to pursue funding opportunities, aid in development of proposals related to the program, mentor post-docs, and educate graduate and undergraduate students.

Candidates must apply to the Acamdeic Online Jobs listing with their resume, a statement of research plans, and two letters of recommendation. These items may also be submitted via email to Art Champagne (artc@physics.unc.edu).
