The Department of Romance Studies, in the College of Arts & Sciences, is recruiting for a managing editor to staff Diacritics, a review journal of criticism and theory. The managing editor provides the professional copyediting and production coordinating skills necessary for smooth processing of manuscripts on literary theory and criticism from the time of their submission until they are actually published. This includes editing manuscripts, proofreading, reformatting, library research for notes and bibliographies, and ultimate submission to press. This position serves as main point of contact for the journal, while providing support for the editor of the journal. The managing editor maintains all business files and inventory of manuscripts received and dispatched, and tracks evaluation of submissions. This person will work with complex literary materials, and will serve as the main liaison between editor, contributors, editorial and advisory board members, illustrators, and publishers.

Considered one of the top journals in its field, Diacritics is a quarterly peer-reviewed journal established in 1971 at Cornell and published by the Johns Hopkins University Press in print and on line. The journal welcomes submissions from scholars at any stages of their careers and also publishes special issues with guest editors. Diacritics publishes original work in and around critical theory, broadly conceived. It follows threads of contemporary criticism without embracing any particular school of thought. The journal strives for inclusiveness, encouraging work that is transhistorical, creative, and rigorous.

Bachelor’s degree required with 2-4 years of relevant experience. Advanced degree preferred, or equivalent combination of experience and education.

The Managing Editor must have a good sense of shared responsibility, collegiality, punctuality, and teamwork. Must be proficient in Microsoft Office, Adobe InDesign, and WordPress. Must also be able to update the journal’s website and social media sites. Must be assertive, tactful, confident, self-motivated, pay attention to detail, meet deadlines, and be interested in the intellectual life of the Department of Romance Studies. Preferred Qualifications: 4-5 years of related experience with academic proofreading and copyediting is preferred. Significant background in literary theory and/or scholarship in the humanities is highly desirable.

Diversity and Inclusion are a part of Cornell University’s heritage. The College of Arts and Sciences at Cornell embraces diversity and seeks candidates who will create a climate that attracts students and faculty of all races, nationalities, and genders. We strongly encourage women and underrepresented minorities to apply. Cornell University is a recognized EEO/AA employer and educator, valuing AA/EEO, Protected Veterans, and Individuals with Disabilities.
