INTRODUCTION

The University of Connecticut School of Law solicits applications for a faculty position as Director of the Law School’s Insurance Law Center (ILC) to commence in the fall of 2021.  Under the general direction of the Dean, the Director will lead the School of Law’s programs in research, teaching, and service and engagement in the areas of insurance and financial risk and regulation.

The ILC was founded in 1998 with a generous endowment from the insurance community in Hartford, America’s historic “insurance capital.”  Today, the ILC is recognized globally as the world leader in the study of law, insurance, and risk.  For over two decades, its unparalleled L.L.M. program has attracted lawyers, professors, and insurance regulators from the U.S. and around the world for graduate studies.  The ILC is unique in its interdisciplinary research on the role of insurance in society.  Its full-time faculty brings a wide array of disciplines, including law, economics, finance, history, sociology, linguistics and philosophy, to the study of risk-pooling and financial services law.  Together with experienced adjunct faculty, students, financial regulators, members of the insurance bar and fellow scholars at other universities, the ILC explores the issues of the day in scholarly workshops and conferences.  The Center also hosts visiting scholars from around the world, has an insurance law collection unmatched by any other U.S. university, and publishes the Connecticut Insurance Law Journal.

The School of Law is the top-ranked public law school in the Northeast.  Its nationally-landmarked campus in Hartford sits close to the headquarters of several global insurance companies, as well as the state capitol and courts.  The Law School hosts four student journals, over forty student organizations, extensive clinical and service engagement with the surrounding communities, and one of the largest law libraries in the world.  More than 100 research centers and institutes serve the wider University’s teaching, research, diversity, and outreach missions, leading to UConn’s ranking as one of the nation’s top research universities.

Founded in 1881, UConn is a Land Grant and Sea Grant institution and member of the Space Grant Consortium. It is the state’s flagship institution of higher education and includes a main campus in Storrs, CT, four regional campuses throughout the state, and 13 Schools and Colleges, including a Law School in Hartford, and Medical and Dental Schools at the UConn Health campus in Farmington. The University has approximately 10,000 faculty and staff and 32,000 students, including nearly 24,000 undergraduates and over 8,000 graduate and professional students. UConn is a Carnegie Foundation R1 (highest research activity) institution, among the top 25 public universities in the nation. Through research, teaching, service, and outreach, UConn embraces diversity and cultivates leadership, integrity, and engaged citizenship in its students, faculty, staff, and alumni. UConn promotes the health and well-being of citizens by enhancing the social, economic, cultural, and natural environments of the state and beyond. The University serves as a beacon of academic and research excellence as well as a center for innovation and social service to communities. UConn is a leader in many scholarly, research, and innovation areas. Today, the path forward includes exciting opportunities and notable challenges. Record numbers of undergraduate applications and support for student success have enabled the University to become extraordinarily selective.

The successful candidate will receive a faculty appointment as either Professor of Law with tenure or Associate Professor of Law on the tenure track.
