Position Description:    

The Lyda Hill Department of Bioinformatics and the Peter O’Donnell Brain Institute at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (UTSW) are launching a joint search for a scientist or physician-scientist who primarily employs computational and computational modeling approaches to timely questions in basic or translational neuroscience. A broad spectrum of research interests will be considered, including but not limited to image-based analyses to develop insights into neural network morphology, organization, or function; the use of computational methods to model information flow between brain regions or to resolve the spatiotemporal dynamics of intrinsic brain activity and how this is disrupted in disease; and the development of novel methods for the comparative analysis of morphological and functional neuronal network topology. The Department of Bioinformatics and the Brain Institute are embedded in a vibrant research community at one of the major Academic Medical Centers in the US. Advancing research in computational biology and brain science is a top priority at UTSW, so the successful candidate will work at the interface between two dynamic and expanding research environments.

The scientific focus of The Lyda Hill Department of Bioinformatics (https://www.utsouthwestern.edu/departments/bioinformatics/) is to create novel computational methods for integrative analysis and modeling of high-dimensional and multi-modal data sets. The development of this program is driven by the premise that at its core, bioinformatics is a pattern recognition problem whose solution relies on the combination of computational theory and algorithms that are sharable across all biomedical data types. Accordingly, the Department is home to faculty that address fundamental questions in computer science while effectively translating the results into high-impact basic and clinical research. 

The O’Donnell Brain Institute (https://www.utsouthwestern.edu/departments/odonnell/) was established to develop UTSW as a leading institution for basic and translational research in brain disease and to develop novel treatments for these disorders. The Brain Institute is strongly focused on human subject neuroscience and major research priorities include neurodegenerative and psychiatric disease. A vigorous fundraising campaign for the O’Donnell Brain Institute has already raised several hundred million dollars to support these ambitious goals. The leadership of both units have joined to align these goals with this and future joint recruitments.

We seek exceptional candidates with a dynamic research program who are also capable of working with current leadership to develop a vision for a neuroinformatics program at the interface between computer science and neuroscience. We will therefore also consider filling this position with exceptional candidates at the rank of Associate or Full Professor. Applicants may propose research programs with a significant clinical and/or experimental component, but successful candidates will distinguish themselves by incorporating a disruptive research program based on innovation in computational approaches. Generous startup packages and research space will be available through resources available to both units. Applicants at the Assistant Professor level may qualify for nomination for the Endowed Scholars Program (http://www.utsouthwestern.edu/education/programs/nondegree-programs/other-programs/endowed-scholars/index.html). Applicants at more advanced levels are expected to complement startup funds with a robust portfolio of grants. 

Deadline for the submission of an application is November 1, 2020 and initial screening of all submissions will be complete by year end 2020. Applicants must have a Ph.D. and/or MD and should submit a 1-page letter of interest, a NIH-formatted biosketch including the Personal Statement and Contributions to Science sections followed by a complete list of publications, a 3-page research statement, and three letters of reference.
