Research Scientist – Electric Power System Modeling

Duke’s Nicholas School of Environment in Durham, North Carolina, is seeking a Research Scientist with experience in quantitative modeling of the United States Electric Power System and a strong interest in making a contribution to integrate renewable energy in an economic and reliable way. The position will be supervised by Dr. Dalia Patino-Echeverri (https://nicholas.duke.edu/people/faculty/patino-echeverri). The researcher will help develop an Energy Management System to schedule and dispatch electric power generating units to meet electricity demand in a sustainable, reliable and economic way. This will include characterizing the uncertainty on demand and the performance of different assets for electricity generation and using this characterization to manage associated risks.

The candidate must have a PhD in a related field, understand the industrial organization of the electricity sector in the United States, understand the challenges posed by the integration of renewables, and have experience simulating the operations of a power system and an electricity market at high temporal resolution. It should have a command of quantitative methods and tools for linear programming and be skilled in describing models, data sources, and results in English. The candidate should excel at working both independently and collaboratively.

Time Frame

Initial appointment will be for one year, with possibility to extend. Position is available starting immediately.
