The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Johns Hopkins University invites applications for one postdoctoral research position in gravitational-wave astronomy beginning September 2021. The position is supported by the NSF award “Collaborative Research: Understanding Compact Binary Formation With The First Gravitational Wave Detections” (Co-PIs: Emanuele Berti and Bangalore Sathyaprakash, Penn State). The ideal applicant should have expertise in general relativity, gravitational-wave source modeling, gravitational-wave data analysis, and the astrophysics of compact binary systems. The goal of this research is to use gravitational-wave observations to explore astrophysical models of compact binaries, and to examine the implication of inspiralling binaries as standard sirens for cosmology. The applicant is expected to interact with other faculty, postdocs and students at Johns Hopkins and Penn State. The Johns Hopkins group is part of the LISA Consortium, of the COST Action ”CA 16104 Gravitational waves, black holes and fundamental physics (GWverse)”, of the MSCA-RISE Network “Gravitational Universe: Challenges and Opportunities”, and of the Indo-U.S. “Centre for the Exploration of Extreme Gravity”, among others. A Ph.D. in physics is required. Applications should consist of a CV, list of publications, summary of research interests, and three letters of recommendation, submitted to Academic Jobs Online. Johns Hopkins is an affirmative action/equal opportunity employer, and welcomes applications from women and members of underrepresented groups.
