POSITION: Extension Associate (Agribusiness and Rural Development). 1-year term with possibility to renew

START DATE: January 1, 2021

LOCATION: Charles H. Dyson School of Applied Economics, Cornell SC Johnson College of Business:College of Agriculture and Life Sciences,                             Ithaca, New York 14850  

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: The person in this position is expected to work under the supervision and direction of a DYSON professorial faculty member to help provide high quality educational programs and applied research to assist managers, directors, and future agricultural leaders in enhancing the overall performance of agriculturally related businesses. Under this supervision, the person will coordinate operations of the Agribusiness and Rural Development Program (ARDP), an existing program within DYSON focused on enhancing the performance of existing agricultural businesses. This work includes, but is not limited to, applied research and producer outreach and education in agricultural product marketing, with a particular emphasis on value-added and direct-to-consumer channels. Additional outreach and applied research activities are expected in related areas of agribusiness management in collaboration with DYSON faculty. The person is expected to actively engage in seeking out sponsored and college funding opportunities, through creation of sponsored proposals, to contribute to his/her support annually.

Outreach efforts include presentation of research results and educational curricula to extension educators, farmers, and other agribusiness professionals in New York State, the Northeast U.S., and the nation. In particular, direct work to improve farmers’ marketing success and efficiency, and to expand their marketing options and opportunities in both direct-to-consumer and wholesale channels will be emphasized.Organizing workshops/meetings, development databases for applied research, writing publications, and on-line communications are expected. This person will also supervise program support staff and students and serve as a significant leader in program development, teaching and marketing strategies, and relationship building with local and regional farmers. 

 QUALIFICATIONS, REQUIRED:

  • Master’s or other graduate degree in agricultural economics, economics, business, or education.
  • Ability to plan and implement educational programs that are responsive and accessible to targeted audience needs.
  • Demonstrated interest and experience in working with agricultural business enterprises.
  • Strong group and educational facilitation skills.
  • Skillful in establishing and maintaining professional work relationships and networks.
  • Ability to develop applied research necessary for program improvement.

QUALIFICATIONS, PREFERRED:

  • Demonstrated business planning, implementing, and evaluating educational programming for farm and other agribusiness clientele.
  • Successful experience in adult education.
  • Ability to incorporate revenue generation into appropriate educational program initiatives including, but not limited to, program fees, partnership development, grant writing, and experience in budget development and management.

APPOINTMENT TYPE: Cornell University Extension Associate appointment, 100% FTE for 1 year
