The Robert J. Margolis, MD, Center for Health Policy at Duke University seeks to address critical health policy challenges and deliver practical, innovative, and evidence-based solutions to improve health and the value of health care. The interdisciplinary nature of Duke-Margolis brings together policy experts, researchers, health care professionals, and students from across Duke’s schools of medicine, nursing, law, public policy, business, and engineering, and fosters extensive relationships with stakeholders both internal and external. These relationships span foundations, private sector organizations, state and federal governments, and global entities. The Center fosters excellence, leadership, and scholarship at every level.

Duke-Margolis has openings for multiple Research Associates within the Center’s biomedical innovation portfolio. The worksite for these positions is the Duke-Margolis office in Washington, DC. Duties will be performed virtually until on-site work restrictions are lifted.

The Research Associates will support Center projects with research, writing, and analysis with a focus on medical product development and innovation, real-world data and evidence, medical device and pharmaceutical policy, and the intersection of scientific and regulatory advancement with broader US health policy reforms. Individuals in these roles may also collaborate on projects spanning a broad range of health policy-relevant topics.

Research Associates produce high-quality work products with limited oversight, demonstrate technical leadership and collaboration with other team members, and delegate project tasks while consistently meeting deadlines. Primary responsibilities include project management; guided content leadership; researching and analyzing complex topics, including conducting background research; drafting and editing summary documents, blog posts, and policy briefs; effectively engaging stakeholders; and managing Center events and convenings. Work will include support for project activities through coordination, logistics management, and some administrative tasks.

Education/Experience Requirements:

·        Any of the following:

o   Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and 6 or more years of relevant work experience.

o   Master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., health policy, public health, health economics, data science, population health, epidemiology) and 4 or more years of relevant work experience.

o   Advanced professional degree (e.g., PhD, PharmD, JD, MD) and 2 or more years of relevant work experience.

·        Training or experience in one or more of the following fields is preferred: health policy, public health, epidemiology, infectious disease, data science, artificial intelligence, or medical product (drug) development/ regulatory science.

·        Strong research, writing, and project management experience.

·        Proven ability to plan and organize content with attention to crafting an argument for specific audiences and appropriately translating scientific details.

·        Demonstrated proficiency in policy or technical research, including the ability to synthesize content from a broad range of sources.

Knowledge/Skills Requirements:

·        Excellent organizational, project management, and communication skills, including the ability to transform complicated information into materials that are easy to understand.

·        Knowledge/experience in biomedical science and health policy.

·        Policy research skills, including the ability to synthesize content from a broad range of sources, are required. Quantitative and qualitative data analysis capabilities are preferred.

·        Ability to interact professionally with senior-level individuals and organizations.

·        Ability to exercise good judgement and initiative.

·        Ability to coordinate a variety of tasks simultaneously, complete tasks with limited oversight and supervision, and manage a project team effectively.

·        Must be able to function independently.

·        Must be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with varied responsibilities.

·        Knowledge of Microsoft Office and relevant research and analytic software.

·        Ability to travel 10% when appropriate (Duke travel is currently restricted).
