The Bergin Laboratory in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Duke University is searching for a Postdoctoral Associate.

Applying Low-Cost PM2.5 Sensor Networks and Satellite Imagery Products to Improve Air Quality in S. Asia Through Policy Relevant Engagement and Capacity Building

Job Description: We are seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher to work on a recently funded US Department of State project that is focused on capacity building to improve air quality in several South Asian countries. Work will involve the development of air quality management strategies and action plans based on low-cost PM2.5 sensor networks, remote sensing, and air quality modeling. The postdoctoral researcher will work closely with research teams both in the US and in South Asia, and research activities will specifically include developing analytics for sensor network calibration, surveillance, and interpretation as well as developing policy relevant mitigation strategies with our in-country partners and stakeholders. Efforts will also include using satellite imagery that will be integrated with ground-based measurements to develop highly resolved spatial maps of PM2.5 across the regions of study. A key component of the expected tasks is coordinating research efforts amongst team members, tracking progress, and preparing progress reports and policy relevant action plans. It is expected that activities will be divided between air pollution monitoring related activities (~30%), related data analytics (~40%), and project management and report writing (~30%).

Requirements: A PhD in a field of Science or Engineering with expertise related to air quality. Experience related to air pollution monitoring and advanced data analytics is preferred. Public policy related expertise is also desirable. Exceptional writing and organizational skills are essential, and a solid track record in peer-reviewed, first-authored publications must be demonstrated.
