About the Position:

The Department of Physics invites applications from qualified candidates for a tenure-track appointment at the Assistant Professor level in Medical Physics beginning July 1, 2021.

Outstanding candidates from all areas of Medical Physics are encouraged to apply with a preference for someone with a strong background in medical imaging.

We encourage applications from candidates in groups underrepresented in physics and/or with experience mentoring students from such groups.

About the Academic Unit:

The Carleton University Department of Physics (physics.carleton.ca) has two major research areas: Medical Physics and Particle Physics. In Medical Physics there are six faculty members on the Carleton campus — including a prestigious Coolidge Award winner and COMP and AAPM Fellows. The group is active in x-ray imaging, bio-photonic imaging for diagnosis and radiation dosimetry, motion tracking and compensation, Monte Carlo radiation transport, and treatment planning for radiation therapy. The Medical Physics doctoral program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Physics Education Programs (CAMPEP).

The Department is the hub of a unique network of medical physicists in Canada's capital, the Ottawa Medical Physics Institute (OMPI, physics.carleton.ca/ompi/). OMPI brings together over 30 physicists from nine institutions in the Ottawa region. OMPI members are active in MRI, molecular imaging, x-ray, radiation oncology physics and dosimetry, environmental health physics, radiation biology, and Monte Carlo radiation transport techniques. OMPI has fostered countless collaborations between its members and institutions on research projects ranging from fundamental physics to clinical trials.

The Department is also part of the Ottawa-Carleton Institute for Biomedical Engineering (OCIBME, ocibme.ca). OCIBME is another diverse community of 100+ researchers, many of whom specialize in medical imaging, image processing and biomedical instrumentation. Physics faculty can supervise biomedical engineering students through OCIBME.

The Department's theoretical and experimental particle physics groups are among the largest and most active in Canada, with expertise in phenomenology, detector instrumentation, and data analysis with comprehensive links to international projects.

Qualifications:

Applicants for this position should possess a Ph.D. in physics. The applicants should have an excellent track record of high-quality research after the degree, that demonstrates potential for independent research. A strong potential of research collaboration with the Ottawa medical physics community is an asset. The applicants must demonstrate potential for excellence in teaching. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a strong, externally funded research program, supervise students, develop and teach undergraduate and graduate physics courses, and play a leading role in OMPI and the CAMPEP graduate program.

Application Instructions:

Candidates should submit a curriculum vitae and statements of their research and teaching interests, and should arrange for letters from three referees to be submitted via: academicjobsonline.org/ajo/Carleton/Physics

Please also provide an Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Statement. This statement may identify challenges or barriers in ensuring an inclusive research and training environment, identify any past experiences in supporting EDI in your previous institutional environment such as in curriculum development, supporting diverse students, and research excellence, in addition to future plans.

Please indicate in your application if you are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
