The Institute for Computational Science at the University of Zurich invites applications for several PhD positions starting in summer 2021.

Candidates are expected to carry out a vigorous research program under supervision of one of the faculty members (Professors Adamek, Feldmann, Helled, Mayer, Moore, Saha, Schneider, Stadel, Teyssier and Yoo). We are looking for applicants with scientific interests in one or more of the following fields: black hole astrophysics, cosmology, data science in astrophysics, galaxy formation, gravitational wave sources, planet formation, and star formation. Candidates with a strong theoretical or computational background are especially encouraged to apply.

Appointments are initially for three years (given satisfactory performance) with a possibility of further extension. A Master?s degree (or equivalent) is required at the starting date of the appointment. Annual salaries are in the range of CHF 47,000-50,000. The University of Zurich is an equal opportunity employer. Women and members of minorities are strongly encouraged to apply.

The scientific computing infrastructure at the University of Zurich is very strong and includes access to the Swiss Supercomputing Centre in Lugano. Zurich offers a very dynamic and international living environment and is consistently ranked as one of the world's best city for quality of living by the Mercer survey.

Applicants should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, academic transcripts, diplomas (as far as already available), a personal statement of interests and goals (no longer than 2 pages), and standardized test scores (e.g., GRE General Test) if available. If diplomas and grades are not originally in French, German, Italian, or English, please provide electronic or scanned copies of certified translations into English. If you are not a native English speaker and have not received your degree from an institution where the only language of instruction is English, we require that you provide us with evidence of your proficiency in English (e.g., TOEFL, CEFR, IELTS, CAE).

All materials should be uploaded to Academic Jobs Online. The candidate should also arrange for at least 2 (up to 3) confidential letters of recommendation to be uploaded to Academic Jobs Online prior to the deadline. Review of applications will begin Jan 11, 2021. All complete applications received on or before this date will receive full consideration. Later applications may be considered until the positions are filled. Following the initial selection process based on the submitted application documents, suitable candidates may be invited to interviews.
