We are inviting applications for highly motivated new PhD students in the laboratory of Dr. Beirowski (at the Hunter James Kelly Research Institute in Buffalo, New York). The Beirowski lab focuses on how glial metabolism regulates axon integrity and myelination (e.g., Nature Neuroscience, PMID 32807950 (https://rdcu.be/b6jJs); Nature Neuroscience, PMID 25195104; PNAS, PMID 28484008). Examples for current projects are in vivo and in vitro mechanistic studies on how metabolic perturbations in oligodendrocytes result in compromised axon integrity, and research on metabolic adaptations in Schwann cells/oligodendrocytes that support the survival of injured axons. Successful candidates are given the opportunity to extend their research interest through collaborations with other groups in the USA.

Methods: Molecular genetics, generation of transgenic mice, diverse biochemical methods such as western blotting and enzyme assays, primary cell culture of neurons and glia, CRISPR/CAS9 genome editing, immunofluorescence, histology, electron microscopy, epifluorescence and confocal microscopy, image analysis, behavioral analysis

Applicants must hold an academic university degree (M.Sc.) or equivalent in a relevant discipline. Interested candidates should send their inquiries or applications (cover letter including a brief statement of research interests, CV, publication list, as well as names and contact details of 2 referees) directly to Dr. Beirowski (bogdanbe@buffalo.edu), or upload the documents on the website.

The Hunter James Kelly Research Institute (hjkri.buffalo.edu) is housed in the New York State Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences (www.bioinformatics.buffalo.edu) on the Buffalo-Niagara Medical Campus adjacent to the Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Hauptman-Woodward Institute, all well-funded and excellent research facilities with state of the art equipment.
