Position Description:

*** this position has been closed and new applications are no longer accepted. ***

The Department of Astronomy and Center for Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics (CCAPP) in the College of Arts and Sciences at The Ohio State University invites applications for a postdoctoral research position to collaborate with Professors Paul Martini, Klaus Honscheid, David Weinberg, and an international team connected to the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI), particularly on topics related to dark energy and cosmic acceleration. We anticipate that the postdoctoral researcher will spend roughly half of their time on the optimization of DESI, including contributions to DESI infrastructure such as instrument operations and survey efficiency, and the other half on original research in observational cosmology with DESI data.

The appointment will begin in Autumn 2021 or earlier and run for two years. An extension to a third year is possible based on performance and availability of funds. Assets of the Ohio State department include a 1/6 observing share of the Large Binocular Telescope, a 1/4 share of MDM observatory, membership in DESI, SDSS-IV and -V, and a lively scientific environment.

Qualifications: Applicants must have a PhD in astronomy, physics, or a related field by the start date of the appointment and experience with the analysis of observational data from cosmological surveys. Direct experience with the analysis of large spectroscopic data sets, cosmology with the Lyman alpha forest, and instrumentation is helpful but not required. Appointment is contingent on the university’s verification of credentials and other information required by law and/or university policies, including but not limited to a criminal background check.

Application Instructions: Please submit a CV, a statement of research interests and 3 reference letters.  Applications will begin to be reviewed January 1, 2021.

The Ohio State University is an NSF Advance Institution. The Ohio State University is an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability status, or protected veteran status.
