Position Description:

Postdoctoral Researcher or Research Scientist in Experimental Aerodynamics

Description
The Ohio State University (OSU) Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering has an open position in experimental aerodynamics. The position will be affiliated with the Computational Aerodynamics and Flow Physics Lab (CAFPLab) at OSU’s Aerospace Research Center (ARC) and Honda’s new HALO wind tunnel facility located at the Transportation Research Center (TRC), in East Liberty, Ohio.

The researcher is expected to utilize world-class wind tunnel facilities to conduct experimental aerodynamic and aeroacoustic R&D alongside Honda researchers at TRC and work in conjunction with computational researchers at CAFPLab for computational simulation validation. Strong partnership with Honda will provide opportunities to collaborate on the development of advanced emerging technologies in a multidisciplinary environment.

Responsibilities
• Plan and execute wind-tunnel tests in full-scale facilities
• Acquire, validate and automatize usage of instrumentation and data acquisition techniques, including (but not limited to) measurement of surface pressure and off-body pressure, velocity and temperature, and sound pressure levels
• Develop devices of various types for empirical studies, including hardware, software, and statistical methods
• Prepare experimental data for validation of numerical CFD results and work in conjunction with computational researchers for experiment/CFD correlation
• Assist in graduate/undergraduate student supervision, technical report and publication preparation, and grant proposal development
• Serve as liaison and works in collaboration with Honda to develop advanced emerging technologies, utilizing the new wind tunnel facility in a multidisciplinary environment

Qualifications
Required: An earned doctorate in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related fields at the time of appointment. Experience in full-scale wind tunnel testing, data acquisition, and instrumentation. Demonstrated record of scholarly achievement evidenced by publications, presentations, or awards. Demonstrated proficiency in written and oral communication skills and an ability to interact well with fellow technical workers with diverse technical backgrounds.

Desired: Background in automotive aerodynamics and some familiarity with aeroacoustics. Experience in collaborating with computational researchers and in conducting experiment/CFD correlation. Research publications in professional journals commensurate with experience.

About the Honda Automotive Labs Ohio  (HALO) Wind Tunnel Facility
The HALO wind tunnel facility is a world-class multifunctional full-scale wind tunnel facility located at the Transportation Research Center (TRC) placed approximately 40 miles outside of Columbus, Ohio that was established by Honda in Ohio with an initial investment of approximately $124 million. The HALO facility is integral to Honda’s aerodynamic and aeroacoustics research activities, spanning from advanced research and computational simulations, through scale‐model and full vehicle development, to production vehicle performance assurance.

The full-scale wind tunnel utilizes a unique interchangeable belt system capable of testing both production vehicles and racecars. It features a five-belt rolling road system designed for the development of production vehicles and a second, single/wide belt system designed for testing high-performance sports cars and purpose-built race vehicles. Wind speeds of up to 192 mph can be produced in the tunnel. The advanced acoustic design will drive the next generation of wind noise reduction by utilizing a strategic system of microphones and cameras set up to measure and identify potential noise issues on both the exterior and interior of a vehicle during the development stage.

About the Transportation Research Center (TRC)
The Transportation Research Center Inc. (TRC) is the leading independent automotive testing facility and proving grounds in the U.S., specializing in research and vehicle testing. On 4,500 acres of land and strategically placed approximately 40 miles outside of Columbus, Ohio, TRC Inc. operates 24/7, conducting brake, crashworthiness, durability, fuel economy, emissions, handling, and performance testing, and ensures the highest level of safety and security for its multiple customers.

TRC Inc.'s experts collaborate with industry partners, such as The Ohio State University, to develop future mobility solutions for passenger and commercial vehicles, including autonomous and active safety technologies. As a multi-user facility, the TRC Inc. team focuses on the complex needs of its various domestic and international customers by providing mobility solutions to develop better vehicles, better drivers, and better roadways.
