The School of Optometry at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for two Assistant or Associate Professor of Clinical Optometry positions with expected start dates as early as January 1, 2022. The scope of this search is broad, encompassing innovative areas of clinical eye and vision care and includes, but is not limited to, clinical binocular vision and disorders, glaucoma, low vision, myopia control, and pediatrics.

Applications are being accepted for two full-time faculty positions from academically qualified clinicians who would be engaged in teaching, clinical service, creative activities, and University and public service.

Basic Qualifications: At the time of application candidates must have an OD from an accredited institution (or equivalent international degree), plus evidence of advanced training or experience post-OD, for example a PhD, MPH, MSc, peer reviewed publications.

Additional Qualifications: Candidates should have three or more years of training and/or experience post OD (or equivalent international degree), a record of active participation and excellence in clinical teaching, evidence of a high level of competence in a clinical specialty and/or evidence of a high level of competence in clinical research. Candidates must have an active optometry license and maintain active licensure throughout their term of employment. Licensure in California is not a requirement to practice within the School’s clinics, but is preferred. To be eligible to work in the clinic, employees must comply with all UC Berkeley Optometry Clinic annual immunization and medical screening requirements, trainings, and University and School policies.

The appointee will be expected to teach professional level courses and actively participate in clinical training and teaching programs in both the professional (Doctor of Optometry) and graduate (PhD program in Vision Science) curricula. Activity in the following areas also will be encouraged: participation in investigations in basic, applied, or clinical sciences, supervision in residency programs, organization of clinic training programs, and University and public service. Appointees in the Professor of Clinical Optometry series are Academic Senate Faculty who may carry a heavier load of teaching and/or clinical service rather than research, as compared to appointees in the tenure track Professor series. A candidate for appointment or advancement in this series shall be judged by the following criteria: teaching, professional competence and activity, creative work, and University and public service.

Diversity, equity, and inclusion are core values of UC Berkeley. Our excellence can only be fully realized by faculty, students, and staff who share our commitment to these values. Successful candidates for our faculty positions will demonstrate evidence of a commitment to equity and inclusion through their teaching, clinical practice, research, and/or service.

The department is committed to addressing the family needs of faculty, including dual career couples and single parents. We are also interested in candidates who have had non-traditional career paths or who have taken time off for family reasons, or who have achieved excellence in careers outside academia.

The successful candidate will also have opportunities to interact and collaborate with members of the Helen Wills Neuroscience Institute, Redwood Center for Theoretical Neuroscience, and the Departments of Bioengineering, Computer Science, Biology and Psychology, amongst others.
