The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has identified synthetic biology as a strategically important area.  With support from Li Ka Shing Foundation and other funding sources, the University is setting up infrastructure, including the establishment of the Institute for Synthetic Biology, to foster the development of this important area at both Clear Water Bay (CWB) and the newly-established Guangzhou (GZ) campuses. 

We are now conducting a global talent search in synthetic biology.  Applications for tenure-track or tenured faculty positions at all ranks namely, Assistant Professor/Associate Professor/Professor/Chair Professor are welcome.  We will be looking for candidates applying synthetic biology for fundamental scientific investigation or innovative technology development in thematic applications in biomedicine, health technology, sustainable living, and food.  Our vision is to develop technologies and solutions in the era of new bioeconomy to improve human conditions.  Applicants with strong research expertise in non-model microorganisms, genome engineering, and data analytics-enabled synthetic biology to accelerate and optimize design-build-test-learn cycle are all welcome.

We are particularly interested in recruiting a Director of the Institute of Synthetic Biology, as well as other senior faculty members with a strong track record in leading and coordinating large-scale collaborative projects in synthetic biology.  The successful applicants would have academic appointments with one or two academic units at CWB Campus or academic hub of GZ Campus.  At CWB Campus, the appointing units could include Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, Division of Life Science, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Department of Ocean Science, Department of Chemistry, Department of Physics, etc.  At HKUST (GZ), the appointment would likely be affiliated in the thrust area of Bioscience and Biomedical engineering of the Systems Hub and others.

HKUST is a world class research institution with over 500 faculty members whose research ranges from science to engineering, business and social sciences.  It is consistently ranked as the top 50 universities in the world by both QS and Times Higher Education university rankings in the last 10 years.  The most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) by the Hong Kong (HK) Government ranks HKUST far above its peer institutions in HK in overall research strength.  Located in the beautiful Clear Water Bay area, HKUST campus has a magnificent ocean view and is widely known as one of the most beautiful campuses in the world.  The city of Hong Kong ranks among the most dynamic cities in the world, offering hard to beat cuisine and convenience.

Under the “Unified HKUST, Complementary Campuses” framework, HKUST(GZ), conveniently situated in Nansha, Guangzhou, is scheduled to open in the fall of 2022, hosting four cross-disciplinary hubs, namely Function, Information, Systems & Society.  With the same standard and same diploma as CWB campus, HKUST(GZ) will have 400 faculty members and 4,000 research postgraduate students in the first phase of 5 years.
