Open-Rank, Tenure-Track positions: Electrical Engineering; Irwin Chair of Engineering
Date of Hire
Full Time. Spring or Fall 2022.
Description
Houghton College invites applications for up to 3 full-time, tenure-track appointments in the Department of Physics, Computer Science, and Engineering at the assistant, associate, or full-professor level starting in the Spring or Fall of 2022. Candidates with exceptional qualifications will also be considered for the Irwin Chair of Engineering, an endowed position that provides support for salary and a spending allowance for research, publications, and travel. In addition, the person holding the Irwin Chair receives yearly release time for the purpose of nurturing and developing our newly launched program in engineering.
Our new engineering program, which was launched in 2019, couples rigorous academics in a strong problem-based learning environment with a strong emphasis on active student engagement in real-world collaborative design projects. We are dedicated to our mission to provide a Christ-centered engineering education, anchored in the liberal arts and sciences, and we see our engineering program as a strategic next step in preparing graduates who can serve the world in ways that honor God and improve the human condition.
Houghton College is committed to the success of this growing program. A recent $3.6 million renovation project remodeled 4,465 sq. ft. in the Paine Center for Science into five separate electrical engineering laboratories to be used as mixed-mode engineering lecture-laboratories and student design project laboratories. The Department of Physics, Computer Science, and Engineering has ten full-time faculty positions, including four in engineering, and plans to seek ABET accreditation in 2024.
Houghton College encourages faculty to pursue opportunities in their field and provides incentives for external collaborations that can benefit students, including research projects or outside consulting. Startup funding and other support, from sources such as the Shannon Summer Research Institute (SSRI) and the Center for Data Science Analytics (CDSA), are available for faculty to develop innovative faculty-student collaborative research and experiential learning programs.
Expectations
The successful candidate will be expected to lead students in engineering design projects and teach a broad range of undergraduate courses in electrical engineering, introductory physics, and general education. Additional expectations include academic advising and proactive engagement with students, service to the College, and scholarly research.
Qualifications
A Ph.D. in electrical engineering is required. Previous teaching experience, experience with the ABET accreditation process, and experience in industry are all desirable. Academic rank and salary will be determined based on experience.
Also required is ability to help students form respectful attitudes and interactions with people who differ in abilities, attitudes, and cultural experience, with sensitivity to factors that affect our own assessment of others.
Other important qualities for this position include a commitment to excellence and creativity in undergraduate teaching, a mature Christian faith, and an ability to integrate Christian faith into their teaching.
