Fermilab’s Superconducting Quantum Materials and Systems (SQMS) Center is seeking candidates for multiple Associate Scientist positions to perform experimental research in the use of SRF cavities for quantum computing and quantum physics. The SQMS Center was established by the National Quantum Initiative Act as a hub in a new cooperative ecosystem built from national labs, universities, and leading companies. The mission of the SQMS Center is to build revolutionary new quantum science platforms that exploit superconducting radio frequency cavities and superconducting qubits for quantum information science (QIS) in the area of quantum computing, quantum sensing and quantum physics experiments.
The successful candidate is expected to work closely with quantum computing researchers at Fermilab and in the larger community associated with the Superconducting Quantum Materials and Systems (SQMS) Center. Areas of immediate interest include development of quantum technologies based on 3D superconducting cavities, developing novel architectures for quantum computing, integration and testing of quantum microwave systems.
As a member of the Center, the position will involve working with a multidisciplinary team, including others who contribute expertise in materials and devices. The research will take advantage of world-class facilities and testbeds available both at Fermilab and with national and international Center partner institutions. It will build on platforms enabled by world leading coherence times of superconducting radiofrequency cavities to improve discovery potential.
We respect, understand, and value individual differences that embody the principles of diversity and abide by all environment, safety, and health regulations. We believe teams are the most successful when everyone may bring their whole selves to work. You would be joining a team with a deeply held commitment to developing and promoting an inclusive work environment.
The appointment is for an initial term of three years extendable by an additional three years prior to evaluation for a permanent position.
You Will
• Design and carry out original research in quantum technologies for computing or physics experiments utilizing 3D superconducting cavities. Develop research ideas into fully fledged programs, make recommendations for future research areas.
• Contribute to hardware-software co-design for developing efficient architectures of quantum computers.
• Develop technical requirements, Environment, Safety & Health (ES&H) documentation, scheduling, and budgeting for the area of assignment. Direct the work of other employees as assigned.
• Perform experiments, analyze data and apply results to progress assigned project.
• Efficiently collaborate with scientists within and outside Fermilab. Interact closely with world-leading researchers in quantum computing across governments, industry, and academia to be up to date with the state-of-the-art science and technology and to identify future research gaps and needs.
• Present research progress and results at internal meetings, give seminar and workshop/conference presentations related to area of research or assignment. Publish papers related to scientific research in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings.
• Serve on Laboratory and professional committees as appropriate. May lecture and teach in a related field of science.
• Abide by and be responsible for performing all duties in accordance with all environmental, health and safety regulations and practices pertinent to this position.
We Are Looking For
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• PhD in Physics, Computer Science, Microwave Engineering, or related fields
• Demonstrated knowledge of quantum computing and/or quantum information science
• Effective interpersonal and written communication skills
• Ability to work in a collaborative environment with colleagues from different disciplines
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Experience with using existing quantum computing platforms
• Knowledge of quantum device physics and qubit fabrication technologies
