We invite applications for a full-time, tenure-track joint position at the rank of Associate Professor in the Department of Geosciences and/or the Department of Computer Science, pending budgetary approval, to begin fall semester 2021. This position will play a central role in advancing Georgia State University’s strategic goals of using collaborative research to tackle the most challenging global and urban issues of the 21st century and ensuring that students from all backgrounds can achieve academic and career success at high rates.

 

We seek a scholar whose work focuses on Geographic Information Systems, Hazard GIS, Health GIS, Spatial Data Analytics, Data Integration, or closely related research area to strengthen interdisciplinary research in Geosciences/Geography, Computer and Data Science, Disaster Informatics, and Computational Epidemiology. In addition to engaging in multidisciplinary research and teaching, the successful candidate will serve as inaugural director of the newly established Center for Disaster Informatics and Computational Epidemiology (DICE) housed in the College of the Arts and Sciences.  The work of the Center will be supported by state-of-the art analytical equipment including research computing cycles, access to regional and national cyberinfrastructure via GSU’s SURAgrid membership, an interactive visualization wall with 25 million active pixels, as well as proximity to other research institutions and federal agencies (e.g., CDC, EPA, and USGS).

The Department of Computer Science (https://www.cs.gsu.edu)  offers bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD degrees in Computer Science and bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Data Science.

 

The selected candidate will be responsible for maintaining an active, funded research agenda, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in the candidate’s area of expertise in the Department of Geosciences and/or the Department of Computer Science. Further, the selected candidate will serve as Director for the Center for Disaster Informatics and Computational Epidemiology (DICE) and will participate in service at the department, college, and university levels.

 

Essential Qualifications

  • A Ph.D. in Computer Science, Geography, Geosciences, or related fields with expertise in Geographical Information Systems
  • A record of publications and external funding at the level required for appointment at the Associate Professor level.
  • Record of interdisciplinary collaborative research

Preferred Qualifications

  • Record of teaching excellence
  • A record of research in the area of population health and disaster response planning
  • Experience in teaching and mentoring students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Experience in administration.
