Occupational summary: Duke University Divinity School seeks a Postdoctoral Associate, effective July 1, 2021, for a two-year appointment. The Postdoctoral Associate will enrich the liturgical focus of Duke Divinity School in its research, teaching, and common worship, especially with respect to the various dimensions of diversity that exist within the school. The position will be expected to teach at least three courses total, provide administrative support and leadership to the anticipated MA certificate in Christian worship, and support the Divinity School Chaplain in resourcing musical offerings for chapel services at Duke Divinity School. Work Performed: Lead the development and implementation of a new certificate in Christian worship. In collaboration with the associate dean for hybrid programs and relevant faculty, design and launch a certificate program to launch during the 2021-22 academic year.

Support DDS external partnerships which revolve around Christian worship programs. In collaboration with senior leadership and key faculty, sustain and develop relationships and partnerships for non-degree certificate worship programs and events, including possibilities for stackable credit/advanced standing options.

Serve as a liturgical resource person for DDS worship services. In collaboration with the Divinity School Chaplain, contribute to the enrichment of worship at Duke Divinity in terms of denominational and ethnic diversity.

Teach in DDS programs. The postdoctoral associate will be expected to teach at least 3 courses in Duke Divinity School’s degree programs in the subject areas of worship including Latinx and Latin American worship traditions.

Qualifications and Experience: Position requires a Th.D. or Ph.D. in Religion, Theology, or a closely related field. At least 3 years of experience in teaching and leading worship, particularly in Praise & Worship/Contemporary Worship/Modern Worship, is required.

Departmental Preferences: An academic doctorate (Ph.D., Th.D. or equivalent) in a relevant discipline and graduate. A graduate degree in music is highly desirable. In addition, facility and expertise in sacramental (Liturgical Movement), Free Church, and Pentecostal liturgical traditions with sufficient breadth to understand the historical, theological, and embodied (both non-musical and musical) aspects of those traditions. Prior experience in teaching and leading worship in Latinx and Latin American contexts is strongly preferred.
