We support discovery science experiments in Illinois and South Dakota and in locations around the world, including deep underground mines in Canada, mountaintops in Arizona and Chile, and the South Pole. 

The Particle Physics Division seeks a highly qualified candidate for an Application Physicist I in the Test Beam Facility and Irradiation Test Area. The Test Beam Facility is a world class facility that supports the detector development community. Users come to test new detector technologies and characterize detectors in a high energy charged hadron beam. The selected candidate will initially focus on maintaining and updating facility detectors and infrastructure in addition to coordinating activities between visiting and internal scientists, engineers, users, technicians, and safety personnel. 

You Will

 â€¢ Assist users in writing scope of work proposals and guiding them through the approval and on boarding process, including Fermilab required training. 
• Help integrate users’ detectors with facility detectors and the facility Data Acquisition (DAQ) system. • Assist users in operational safety reviews. 
• Lead development of new tracking chambers and other upgraded instrumentation. 
• Assist in the operation and development of the new Irradiation Test Area. 
• Participate in beam studies and analyze data from facility instrumentation. 
• Give presentations about the facility and help track community usage and the scientific impact of the program. • Give tours of facilities. 
• Travel to conferences to recruit users. 
• Work flexible hours and take on-call to vet problems at the facilities. 
• Assist in intermediate and long range planning for future beamlines and test beam facilities. 
• Abide by and be responsible for performing all duties in accordance with all environmental, health, and safety regulations and practices pertinent to this position.

We Are Looking For 

• Ph.D. in Physics with postdoc experience (Minimum of 3 years preferred)
• 3+ years of experience with particle detectors or accelerators. 
• Knowledge of standard HEP lab instruments and tools • C++, scripting language(s), and Root 
• Excellent interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to develop and maintain professional relationships 
• Strong problem-solving skills
• Ability to work within a complex environment/organization 
• Ability to multi-task and work on multiple projects simultaneously 
• Experience with developing and testing particle detectors is highly desired
