Condensed Matter Theory postdoc positions at the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Sciences.

The Kavli Institute for Theoretical Sciences (KITS) in Beijing sincerely invites applicants for the KITS postdoc fellow positions in condensed matter theory, starting in September 2021. The current faculty members of the condensed matter theory group at KITS include: Bo Gu, Biao Huang (incoming 2021), Shenghan Jiang, Mamoru Matsuo, Gang Su, Fu-Chun Zhang, Long Zhang, and Zheng Zhu. The KITS is a fast-growing institute affiliated with the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS). It focuses on promoting high quality research and international cooperation in theoretical sciences. Located in close proximity to institutes such as Peking University, Tsinghua University, and the Institute of Physics at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (IOP-CAS), it is part of a very dynamic academic community.

The appointment is for two years, extendable for an additional year. Successful candidates will be provided with: 1. competitive annual salary: 300,000 CNY (~ 42K USD) or higher, depending on qualifications; 2. generous travel grant; 3. housing benefit: 6000 CNY (~ 850 USD) /month housing compensation; 4. strong administrative support (especially for international members of the group). KITS postdoc fellows are encouraged to work with any member(s) of the group, as well as to work independently on topics broadly aligned with the group’s interests. Current interests of the group include: strongly correlated electron systems, topological states of matter, topological quantum computation, spintronics, DMRG, MPS and tensor network-based numerical techniques, non-equilibrium quantum dynamics, etc. In addition, they are also strongly encouraged to interact and collaborate with other groups at KITS, including the high energy theory group, the biophysics group (being built in progress) and the quantum information theory group (being built in progress). Applicants should have a PhD degree or equivalent in theoretical physics, completed or expected by 2021. Please submit a cover letter, a CV, a publication list, a research statement, and arrange three recommendation letters to be sent via academicjobsonline.

Applications received prior to Jan 31 will be guaranteed full considerations. Applications received after the deadline may also be considered until the positions are filled. Note: Exceptional early-career applicants (within 3 years since PhD and below the age of 35) also have the opportunity to apply for a highly competitive special postdoc program in the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). These programs are of three-year appointments, extendable for another three years. They offer significantly higher salaries and come with the possibility of promoting to tenure-track assistant professor positions after that. Besides, successful candidates can also apply for postdoc research grants from the university, as well as from outside (e.g. NSFC) after joining. KITS strongly encourage potential candidates to apply for these opportunities and will help with the application procedures.
