Position Description:    

The Biological Complexity Unit at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST), Japan, headed by Prof. Simone Pigolotti, is looking for two outstanding candidates for postdoctoral positions. The research unit studies biological systems using mathematical and computational methods of nonequilibrium statistical physics.

Specific topics for the two positions are:

1) Information processing in cells. The candidate is expected to characterize performance of information-processing subcellular systems such as replicating enzymes. Please see our website https://groups.oist.jp/bcu/research for more information.

2) Effect of oceanic currents on diversity of microbial communities. The candidate is expected to study the role of oceanic currents in shaping biodiversity of planktonic species using individual-based models. Please see our recent work Villa-Martín et al., Science Advances (2020) for more information.

Ideal candidates would have a Ph.D. in theoretical biophysics, statistical physics, mathematical biology or related topics and excellent analytical/computational skills. Experience in bioinformatics and in the specific research topics are added values. Outstanding candidates interested in other research lines of the Unit will be considered as well.
