The American Indian Studies Program at CSULB is the oldest American Indian Studies Program in the CSU. Located on the ancient Gabrielino-Tongva village and sacred site of Puvungna, CSULB is the only University in the United States to have reburied the indigenous people of the land on a university campus. The first reburial of one Gabrielino-Tongva ancestor was in 1979 and the second reburial under NAGPRA, took place in 2016 with almost one-hundred human remains reburied. In addition to our partnership with the California Indian community, CSULB also serves one of the largest urban American Indian communities in the United States. leaders in the Urban American Indian Community developed and have supported the Annual CSULB Pow Wow for the past fifty years. The Pow Wow is a public event and the oldest and largest continuous student-sponsored event on upper campus attracting over six thousand people to CSULB each year. A section of lower campus is an active ceremonial site and gathering place for California Indian people that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These events on lower campus, although numerous, are generally private events not intended for the general public in contrast to the Annual Pow Wow. Candidates who are interested in this balance of serving California Indians and urban American Indians in California are highly encouraged to apply for this position.
