In the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) era, experiments face a substantial data challenge. Meeting this challenge will require ingenuity, creativity, and energy. Therefore, the University of Notre Dame High Energy Physics Group seeks a postdoctoral research associate to tackle this challenge in the context of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment. The successful candidate would play a leading role in developing software to enable large-scale machine learning and Python-based data analysis for the HL-LHC time scale. In addition, the successful candidate would also have the opportunity to participate in additional physics analysis or computing-related tasks, depending on the candidate’s interests.

The CMS group at Notre Dame (Hildreth, Jessop, Lannon, Ruchti, Wayne) has played a leading role in the construction, commissioning and operation of the CMS hadron calorimeter, and the electromagnetic calorimeter (ECAL) and has extensive roles in software development, high level trigger (HLT) operations, and computing. In particular, the group has leadership roles within CMS and U.S. CMS in software development, software R&D, and distributed computing. The group is also actively engaged in developing and coordinating detector upgrade projects for the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC), including the ECAL/HCAL, MIP timing detector (MTD), and Level 1 track trigger. Group members have leadership roles in CMS physics analyses with interests in Higgs coupling measurements (ttH and anomalous Higgs decays), top physics (including searches for new physics using effective field theory techniques), searches for exotic particles and electroweak physics.

The group is looking for an outstanding applicant who has obtained, or is about to obtain, a Ph.D. in Experimental Particle Physics, Computer Science, Data Science or a related field. For full consideration, applications should be received by March 1. For inquiries, please contact Profs. Mike Hildreth (mhildret@nd.edu) or Kevin Lannon (klannon@nd.edu).

Applicants should submit a curriculum vitae, a list of publications to which they have made significant contributions, a description of research interests and skills, and arrange for three letters of recommendation to be sent via the Academic Jobs Online website. For the description of research interests and skills, please address your experience with machine learning and/or software development.
