The Rice Center for Transforming Data to Knowledge, informally called the D2K Lab, seeks applicants with strong machine learning and applied data science experience for an open-rank teaching-track professor position. The D2K Lab (d2k.rice.edu) is a center within the George R. Brown School of Engineering at Rice University in Houston, TX. The mission of the D2K Lab is to support data science education at Rice through immersive, experiential learning opportunities in data science. The D2K Lab offers a series of curricular and co-curricular programs and events for students that connect them to real world data science problems from partners and clients. The D2K Lab works closely with data science oriented departments in the School of Engineering (Electrical and Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Statistics, and Computational and Applied Math), and all D2K Lab experiential learning courses will be embedded into existing or newly created academic programs and degrees.

Candidates for these Teaching Track positions should have a PhD in a relevant quantitative field and have demonstrated potential or a strong record of teaching excellence. Candidates with industry experience or strong applied machine learning or data science research experience in the areas of healthcare and biomedical research, social science and public policy, energy, finance, or technology are especially encouraged to apply. Each candidate will have an academic home in the D2K Lab but will also be affiliated with core collaborating departments such as Statistics, Computer Science, or Electrical and Computer Engineering. Teaching track faculty positions at Rice University offer promotable career paths for faculty who are committed to excellence in teaching.

The D2K Teaching faculty positions offer flexible opportunities for individuals passionate about data science education. Hiring at the associate or full teaching professor rank may be considered for an outstanding candidate with sufficient experience. The precise job responsibilities will be tailored for each candidate, but may include:

Teaching or team-teaching D2K Lab experiential learning courses. Developing new D2K experiential learning courses or other data science courses. Teaching traditional (lecture-style) machine learning or data science courses at the undergraduate or masters level. Building and fostering partnerships with industry, the public sector, the medical center, and other academics by helping to develop client-sponsored data science projects. Mentoring student teams on client-sponsored data science projects. Conducting research in data science, data science education, or developing data science software. Performing service with the D2K Lab and associated academic departments in support of data science education. To apply to these positions, please submit a cover letter, CV, a teaching statement, examples of teaching materials, and optionally, a statement on relevant data science research experience. Questions regarding this position can be directed to Genevera Allen (d2k@rice.edu), the D2K Lab Faculty Director. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, with start dates in Fall 2021.

The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to teaching, advising, and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students from diverse backgrounds.

Consistent with the National Research Council’s report, Convergence: Facilitating Transdisciplinary Integration of Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Engineering, and Beyond, we are seeking candidates who have demonstrated ability to lead and work in research groups that “… [integrate] the knowledge, tools, and ways of thinking…” from engineering, mathematics, and computational, natural, social and behavioral sciences to solve societal problems using a convergent approach.

We seek greater representation of women, minorities, people with disabilities, and veterans in disciplines in which they have historically been underrepresented; to attract international students from a wider range of countries and backgrounds; to accelerate progress in building a faculty and staff who are diverse in background and thought; and we support an inclusive environment that fosters interaction and understanding within our diverse community.

The George R. Brown School of Engineering ranks among the top 20 of undergraduate engineering programs (US News & World Report) and is strongly committed to nurturing the aspirations of faculty, staff and students in an inclusive environment.
