NIBSC – Section Head - Microbiome We are currently looking for a dedicated Section Head to join our Microbiome Team within the National Institute for Biological Standards and Control (NIBSC). This is a full time opportunity, on a permanent basis. Who are we? The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency enhance and improve the health of millions of people every day through the effective regulation of medicines and medical devices, underpinned by science and research. The Division of Bacteriology at NIBSC currently consists of 9 specialist groups and around 50 scientists (including PhD students). The Division is responsible for independent batch release testing of bacterial vaccines to ensure quality and safety, and the development and characterisation of biological standards, including WHO International Standards. Scientists within the Division work closely with National and International Stakeholders such as the WHO, European Pharmacopoeia and EDQM to develop and revise monographs and guidelines on the control and standardisation of biological medicines. What’s the role? The post holder will lead a multidisciplinary microbiome team within the Division of Bacteriology at NIBSC. The microbiome is one of the fastest growing fields in science with a large number of active clinical trials for microbiome therapy and influences all traditional fields of biological research. Microbiome work at NIBSC will encompass the three key business functions of NIBSC and the primary function of the post is to lead and develop the microbiome section at NIBSC to support the institutes science strategy with a focus on developing standards and regulatory science research. Key responsibilities: • Lead and manage a team of scientists and bioinformaticians to successfully deliver multiple large programs of work in collaboration with scientific Divisions at NIBSC, the wider civil service, global academic institutions, and manufacturers. • Supervise, train, and manage PhD Students and Postdoctoral Fellows to develop the next generation of scientists for the agency and civil service. There will be line-management responsibilities for multiple members of the section and the post-holder will need to set long term goals, short-term objectives, and manage performance of staff where necessary. • Work with the Divisional Head and other senior staff to help develop and deliver the science strategy as a member of Bacteriology Management Team and other management groups and institute committees. • Manage the research programmes for the microbiome section and set the strategic direction for research that supports the core functions of the institute. This will include collaborating nationally and internationally with key partners to develop and lead large microbiome research programs across multiple therapeutic areas incorporating the disciplines of microbiology, synthetic biology, ecology, bioinformatics and statistics. • Publish in leading international journals and represent the institute in relevant Stakeholder fora to actively promote the institutes reputation externally. This could include presenting at international scientific meetings, holding workshops at other leading regulatory bodies, and representing the institute on external scientific committees. Our successful candidate will: • Have proven leadership skills with an ability to inspire and motivate teams to be fully engaged in their work and deliver against objectives • Be an excellent communicator with the ability to influence others and to relay complex scientific information to experts or non-experts in an effective manner • Have substantial postdoctoral research experience in the field of microbiology and the microbiome as evidenced by peer reviewed publications and international conference presentations • Hold a science degree with a significant microbiological component • Hold a PhD in a relevant discipline If you would like to find out more about this fantastic opportunity, please read our Job Description and Person Specification!
