Duke’s Nicholas School of Environment in Durham, North Carolina, is seeking a Research Scientist with experience in mechanisms of toxicant-induced effects and a strong interest in the impacts of environmental contaminants on kidney development. The position will be supervised by Dr. Nishad Jayasundara. The researcher will help develop a project to investigate how the exposure to environmental contaminants alter kidney development and increases the risk of kidney disease later in life. Studies will focus on zebrafish Danio rerio as a model organism. The candidate must have a Ph.D. in a related field, understand the mechanisms involved in toxicity of environmental exposures and have experience both generating and interpreting the toxicity data. The candidate should excel at working both independently and collaboratively. The ability to collaborate and coordinate research is highly desirable.

RESPONSIBILITIES: • Independently lead and execute research projects within the Jayasundara laboratory. • Contribute towards major grant applications providing data and writing. • Serve as the point person for assigned projects and coordinate collaborative science internally and externally. • Design experiments to address exposure-related chronic kidney disease by toxicity testing and RNA sequencing platforms. • Analyze and interpret sequencing data. • Provide guidance to junior scientists and train students.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE • A Ph.D. in biological science or related field is required. • 2-3 years of Postdoctoral training is highly desirable. • Molecular biology laboratory experience with knowledge of kidney development, toxicity and disease. • Zebrafish exposure model and study design experience. • A basic level of understanding RNA sequencing with experience in next-generation sequencing and library preparation. • Excellent oral and communication skills • Must be team oriented and able to work effectively in a highly collaborative work environment.
