Schmid College of Science and Technology at Chapman University seeks applicants for a non-tenure track, full-time position of Instructional Assistant Professor of Physics, effective August 2021.

The Physics program prides itself on personalized education, small class sizes, innovative curriculum and teaching methods, and direct student-faculty mentorship. Instructional faculty play a critical role in the program for teaching, pedagogy, advising, and service, have the opportunity for promotion to associate and full instructional professor, and have full voting power at both the program and college levels. Requirements include a Ph.D. in Physics or a related field

The ideal candidate will have broad training in physics, and have experience with both designing and teaching introductory physics courses and laboratories using evidence-based instructional approaches. The ideal candidate will show the ability to teach fundamental physical concepts to a broad audience with diverse prior backgrounds, and demonstrate the ability to inspire scientific curiosity. The ideal candidate will have interest in student mentorship, building student community, and assisting with student outreach. Finally, the ideal candidate will have excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills. 

The successful candidate will teach lectures and laboratory sections in the introductory physics sequences for the life sciences, with a focus on the PHYS 107/108/207 sequence taken primarily by majors in biology, biochemistry, chemistry, health sciences, and biophysics. The successful candidate will help develop and improve the introductory curriculum in close collaboration with physics faculty, while coordinating with faculty from biology, chemistry, and the health sciences. The successful candidate will also help coordinate laboratories for this introductory sequence. In this role, the candidate will help assess the laboratory curriculum, modify and develop new labs as appropriate, and coordinate part-time instructors. The successful candidate will also be an active participant in program activities and engage with the vibrant community of physics faculty and students.
