Post-doc Position in Population Studies of Health Disparities, Forecasting Aging-Related Diseases and Genetic Regulation of Aging

Availability: Immediately

 

An open research opportunity at the Biodemography of Aging Research Unit (BARU), Social Sciences Research Institute, Duke University for National Institute on Aging (NIA) funded projects.

The applicant should have exceptional, demonstrable, skill in academic writing and the ability to produce publication quality manuscripts on an assigned subject with little supervision, at least during the drafting stage.  A proven track record of independent publication in peer-reviewed journals as first or second author with author contributions explicitly allocated in line with the above requirement would be a strong plus.  Preferred areas of study include population studies, epidemiology, statistical analysis of survival and longitudinal data. The ideal candidate will have experience in analyzing large-scale population data, experience with administrative and/or electronic health record data (familiarity with Medicare/Medicaid preferred), hands-on experience with managing and analyzing genetic data as well as familiarity with analysis of disease-related risk and treatment effects.  Strong capability with either SAS, R or both is preferred. Analytic skills, experience in mathematical modeling, and experience in other programming languages are a plus.

The position assumes pro-active communication on the part of the prospective hire throughout his/her tenure of employment, and the ability to integrate into and collaborate with a multicultural inter-disciplinary environment.  This position is expected to last for at least two years with further extensions possible pending continued funding and satisfactory performance, but not guaranteed.  Day-to-day tasks will include a combination of data processing, analysis and manuscript-drafting-related tasks.  An important component of the expected contribution from the new hire is the ability to produce publication-quality manuscripts on one or more of the following topics (with yearly performance evaluations being performance-based):

  • Health disparities in Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia risks and outcomes;
  • Forecasting approaches focusing on predicting the prevalence of aging-related diseases;
  • Genetic regulation and heterogeneity of aging/health/longevity traits.
