The Department of Human Sciences in the College of Education and Human Ecology at The Ohio State University invites applications for a full-time (9-month) clinical faculty position at the Assistant Professor or Associate Professor rank in Fashion and Retail Studies (FRS) to complement and extend our existing expertise and contribute to our program. We seek individuals who can increase the breadth of teaching and outreach efforts of our fashion and retail studies program and create linkages with related programs within our unit, across campus, as well as across universities. This position will begin in August of 2021.

The successful candidate will primarily teach courses in our fashion and retail studies undergraduate degree program. We seek candidates with expertise in teaching undergraduate coursework devoted to international retailing, digital retailing/analytics, corporate social responsibility, apparel product development, social psychology of appearance, or textiles. The candidate may be offered opportunities to teach courses in our fashion and retail studies graduate degree program. The position also involves engagement in curriculum development, student recruitment, opportunity to advise and direct graduate students, and the opportunity to collaborate with colleagues to further develop the masters degree program in fashion and retail studies. Additional expectations include service to the department (including the industry advisory board), college, and the community, and performance of administrative duties as needed. The successful candidate should possess and apply current knowledge of research affecting practice within the field of fashion and retail studies, though conducting original research is not a major responsibility of this position.

Qualifications: Candidates with an earned doctorate in FRS are strongly preferred. Broad areas of expertise that complement fashion and retail studies will be considered, including but not limited to fair trade, sourcing, social responsibility, sustainability, health and wellness, management, fashion business entrepreneurship, or business. The successful candidate must be interested in applying their expertise to the fashion and retail industry. The candidate selected for this position must demonstrate the ability to meet eligibility requirements to work in the United States by August 2021. Experience working in the fashion/retail industry and with industry partners is desired. Preference will be granted to candidates who demonstrate excellence in advancing diversity, equity and inclusion in their teaching and service agendas and who offer robust evidence of sustained impact.

The Department welcomes applications from individuals who may have had nontraditional career paths or who may have taken time off for family reasons (e.g., children, caring for disabled or elderly family), or who have achieved excellence in careers outside of academia (e.g., in professional or industry service). The Department is committed to supporting the work-life balance of its faculty, staff, and students. The Ohio State University is responsive to the needs of dual career couples.

Fashion and Retail Studies: The Fashion and Retail Studies program currently has four full-time lecturers and a clinical associate professor, with robust enrollments in undergraduate classes. The 11,500+ holdings encompass a range of three-dimensional objects such as textiles and articles of clothing and accessories for men, women, and children, including national dress costume, from the mid-18th century to contemporary 21st century designers.

Application Instructions: For preferred consideration, completed applications should be received by March 15, 2021. Please submit a letter of application, curriculum vitae, teaching statement, diversity statement, and a list of three references. The diversity statement should address the candidate’s perspective and philosophy bearing on diversity, equity and inclusion in teaching and service, and should describe demonstrated accomplishments affirming the philosophy and commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
