Assistant Professor/Assistant Manager –Electron Microscopy Facility Duties/Responsibilities This position reports to the Manager of the Electron Microscopy Facility. The Facility is affiliated with the Department of Radiology, in the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Responsibilities of the position include customer specimen preparation and imaging, education, training, and supervision of faculty, staff, students, and industrial users in the use of the Facility’s advanced electron microscopy instrumentation. The Assistant Manager must have an in-depth understanding and hands-on proficiency with conventional and advanced electron microscopy techniques, including TEM, SEM, tissue processing and ultramicrotomy, used with a wide variety of sample types and research applications. This position also will help manage financial aspects of the Facility, both month-to-month and FY, generate Facility performance reports for the home department, develop costing structures for billable services, and participate in long-range & strategic planning for t Specific duties include: • Specimen preparation and imaging for internal and external customers. • One-on-one training of Facility users, certifying them to use equipment unsupervised, and trouble-shooting with users when instrument issues arise. • Assist advanced users in analytical use of the instruments, analyze & interpret scientific data, identify areas of concern, and recommend ways to resolve problems using expertise in advanced microscopy technique. • The complexity of the instruments requires technical expertise to identify performance issues, complete performance testing & verification, and oversee instrument maintenance by service engineers. • Assist with management of the finances of the Facility, including ordering lab supplies, coordinating with departmental and medical school staff to ensure users are properly set up on billing site, approval of monthly ledgers, monitoring of Facility budget, updating of instrument rates, generation of Facility performance reports, preparation of applications for internal and external funding, and participation in long-range & strategic planning for the Facility. • Develop & manage all safety protocols, verify all individuals working in the Facility are adequately trained & compliant. • Collaborate with users of the Facility on grant applications, research publications, and data generation & interpretation. • Consult with users of the Facility on research project development utilizing Facility instrumentation and research design & methods. • Act as lead in Facility-hosted events, including regional microscopy society meetings and tours of the Facility. Past tours include graduate student recruiting visits by several departments, students in medical school curriculum, and local high school science classes. Minimum Required Education and Experience • Master’s Degree in Cell Biology, Engineering or related field. • At least five (5) years of experience in electron microscopy using advanced microscopy techniques. Minimum Required Skills and Abilities • In-depth knowledge of conventional and advanced electron microscopy techniques used with a wide variety of sample types and fields of research as applied to TEM, SEM, tissue processing and ultramicrotomy (both room temperature and cryo-techniques). • Strong sense of customer service, excellent written & verbal communication skills. • Ability to interact with internal & external facility users and identify experimental needs. Preferred Qualifications • PhD • At least five (5) years of experience in a microscopy core using advanced microscopy techniques.
