The Department of Statistical Science at Duke University invites applications for a faculty position at the rank of assistant professor of the practice to begin in the fall semester of 2021. Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate outstanding teaching and strong interests in statistical and data science education, as well as developing and growing our undergraduate major in Statistical Science and interdepartmental major in Data Science.

Responsibilities include teaching three courses per year (undergraduate as well as opportunities at the graduate level), supervising undergraduate honors theses and research projects, and supporting statistical and data science education at Duke. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in statistics, biostatistics, data science or a related field. In addition to dedication to excellence in teaching and mentoring Duke undergraduates at all levels, applicants must be interested in establishing a national reputation for their scholarship, for example, in statistical education, interdisciplinary collaborations, or research. Professors of the practice at Duke are regular rank faculty members with term renewable appointments, where the expectation is for repeated reappointments for faculty who demonstrate excellence in education and scholarship.

The Department is an internationally recognized center of excellence for research and education in statistical science. With leading strengths in Bayesian analysis, interdisciplinary applications and computationally intensive methods, the Department offers outstanding teaching support, computational facilities, and opportunities for interdisciplinary teaching and collaboration. The Department currently offers an undergraduate major and minor in statistical science, an undergraduate major in data science administered jointly with the Department of Computer Science, and thriving Ph.D. and Master’s programs in statistical science. The Department comprises 28 regular rank faculty, over 100 graduate students, and around 50 graduating seniors each year whose major is in statistical science.
