Assistant Project Scientist with the California EIC Consortium 


The California EIC consortium consists of five University of California and California-State University campuses and three National Laboratories.(Berkeley, Davis, Los Angeles, Riverside, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, LBNL, LLNL, and LANL).

. Our consortium members will work together on EIC physics and detector development, with emphasis on the silicon tracker and forward calorimeters.

The EIC project is in a critical juncture, with the call for detector proposals and collaboration formation expected to occur this year. In this context, The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of California, Riverside invites applicants for an Assistant Project Scientist (“California EIC Fellow”) to conduct applied research for the California EIC consortium. The selected candidate will:
  • Coordinate the work among campuses and national laboratories, and lead publication of the consortium’s research.

  • Help supervise graduate and undergraduate students among campuses, enhancing campus collaboration with LLNL, LANL and LBNL. 

  • Contribute to the design of silicon-tracker and calorimeter systems for EIC detectors, as well as development of new observables. 

  • Carry out large-scale computations, utilizing the supercomputer systems at LBNL’s NERSC facility and at LLNL, and coordinate across collaborating institutions.

  • Present research results in seminars and at scientific conferences.

The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to get involved with ongoing research efforts with members of the consortium. Ongoing projects include: the ALICE and LHCb experiments at the LHC; the STAR and sPHENIX experiments at RHIC;  experiments at the Jefferson Laboratory (at Hall-A, Hall-C, and CLAS12); and the H1 experiment at HERA.


Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Ph.D. in Physics. by the date of hire.

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • Experience with experimental nuclear or particle physics at colliders or fixed-target experiments (at RHIC, JLab, or CERN).

  • Demonstrated ability to work within large collaborations.
