Position Description:    

Postdoctoral Researcher - Duke University Pratt School of Engineering in Collaboration with the School of Medicine.

Immediate Need: Start date mid-May 2021 (duration 9 months)

We are recruiting a postdoctoral researcher to join our team working on a novel intravascular oxygenation catheter device. Our research is at the intersection of engineering and medicine. The vision for this position is to strengthen the engineering aspects of the ongoing research as we work to translate this technology from bench to bedside. The research is primarily experimental (~70%) with a significant modeling effort (~30%). The successful candidate will join a dynamic team of engineers and medical doctors. The ideal candidate will demonstrate an aptitude for problem solving and an attention to detail. Interaction with industry sponsors is likely.

Job responsibility:

Develop, build, and optimize new highly efficient intravascular and extracorporeal oxygenation devices from idea creation through early prototype development

Work collaboratively with engineers and physicians during all phases of experimentation and prototype development

Develop and build new bench top and in vitro experimental and test systems

Perform lab tests to determine the effectiveness of new the devices or test systems using established industry standards

Data curation, perform post run data analysis, result interpretation and generate run summaries

Develop and run mathematical models of the systems being developed (e.g., using COMSOL) to guide prototyping

Help improve the efficacy of the iterative devices/prototypes/systems with problem solving, idea creation, and design implementation

Write peer-reviewed journal articles reporting and discussing the findings

Candidate Requirements, Desired Skills and Experience: Ph.D. in Chemical, Civil and Environmental, Biomedical, Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.

Prior research experience in related fields is required: bubbleless aeration, mass transfer, hollow fiber membrane reactors, modeling (in particular multiphysics and computational fluid dynamics), biomedical devices (mechanical ventilation, extracorporeal life support, vascular devices. Hands-on experience with pumps, gas and liquid flow systems, sensors, data loggers, electromechanical assembly. Experience with control systems, microcontroller programming.

The research includes working with animal blood using standard safety procedures.
