POSTDOCTORAL ASSOCIATE

Position Summary: The New York State Water Resources Institute (WRI) in the Department of Biological and Environmental Engineering at Cornell University is inviting applications for a position in the field of water resource science, management, and policy. We are looking for an individual with a PhD in environmental engineering, hydrology, land use planning, geography or related fields, and an interest in outreach and applied research focused on lake, tributary, watershed and estuary management. 

The applicant will be expected to develop and maintain a relationship with remote WRI staff working off-campus in regional watershed programs and will perform research and outreach that furthers goals outlined in NY’s Great Lakes Action Agenda and the Hudson River Estuary Program Action Agenda. 

Research/outreach topics will likely fall within the following cross-cutting water resource themes: 
• Urbanization & Infrastructure 
• Watershed Management 
• Water Quality Monitoring & Assessment 
• Climate Change & Resilience 
• Water Literacy 

The ideal candidate will have interest, and experience, in working with state extension or similar organizations, and will be able to facilitate the transfer of regional watershed programming to other state-wide and regional stakeholders. This position reports to the WRI Director. 

Duties and Responsibilities: 
• Initiate, lead and coordinate multidisciplinary research projects in cooperation with watershed-based staff and Cornell researchers (35%) 
• Engage in outreach activities with watershed staff and other NYS stakeholders (35%) 
• Assist in WRI’s general mission of providing resources to improve water management and policy by providing timely research and outreach to NYS stakeholders through publication of relevant peer-reviewed literature, white papers, web content, and presentations at scientific conferences and other appropriate venues of water resource management (12%) 
• Develop additional projects building on the strengths, interests, and expertise of the candidate (10%)
• Assist in development of proposals to secure external funding for research projects (5%) 
• Regular travel within NYS (~10 a year). Valid driver’s license required (3%) 

Qualifications: 
The successful candidate will have: 
• PhD in environmental engineering, hydrology, land use planning, geography or related field 
• A proven ability to deliver products of various types (e.g., peer-reviewed publications, extension products) for various audiences (e.g., academic, public, professional) 
• Willingness and ability to assume a leadership role and conduct research and extension as part of a multidisciplinary team 
• Fluency in written and spoken English Additional preferred qualifications include one or more of the following: 
• Experience working with environmental managers, state agency staff, or policy makers 
• Expertise in the cause and management of harmful algal blooms 
• Expertise is the assessment or execution of aquatic connectivity projects such as dam removals or culvert right-sizing 
• Expertise in aquatic invasive species and their management
• Expertise in watershed planning & modeling, including engagement with community stakeholders 

This position is an annual appointment with review each year, and reappointment is contingent upon performance and the availability of funding. The annual cycle for the funds that support this position starts on January 1 of each year through December 31. Additional funds are expected but not guaranteed.

Pay Ranges:

The hiring rate of pay for the successful candidate will be determined considering the following criteria:

  • Prior relevant work or industry experience.
  • Education level to the extent education is relevant to the position.
  • Academic Discipline (faculty pay ranges reflects 9-month annual salary)
  • Unique applicable skills.
